On Saturday, March 10th, the Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco opened the group show Wayward Fairy Tales, curated by artists Glenn arthur and Jeff Felker. Each artist in the show took inspiration from a classic fairy tale, and gave it a new spin. While this was a smaller group show, with 8 artists submitting work, the paintings were outstanding. I like the idea of group shows with 20 or even 100 artists participating, but I often feel as though some of the work in the show doesn’t get the full attention it deserves. That was definitely not the case with this exhibition, the art was good and the crowd spent a good deal of time enjoying it.

Preview: “Wayward Fairy Tales” group show @ Modern Eden
Opening this Saturday, March 10th from 6-10 PM is a new group show entitled Wayward Fairy Tales. Curated by Jeff Felker and Glenn Arthur, this show will feature work by Jason Levesque, Leilani Bustamante, Chelsea Greene, Glenn Arthur, Kelly Castillo, Ahren Hertel, Aunia Kahn, and Jeff Felker. Each artist will be presenting their rendition of classic fairy tales. We’re all used to the “happily ever after” ideal, but this show will set out to prove that “beautiful tragedies” can be just as amazing. This exhibition runs until April 7th, so if you can’t be there for the reception make sure to stop by when you can.

The Narrative Works of Jeff Felker
An artist working out of Sacramento, Ca, Jeff Felker has a degree in English as well as studio art. He works primarily in oils, and was nice enough to share some of the new works he will be exhibiting at an upcoming show at Rothick Art Haus this February 12th, entitled “Behind the Striped Curtain”. This group show focuses on circus themed art, so Jeff’s works “address female empowerment in the misogynistic, objectifying environment of circus sideshows. In circus sideshows women are commodified for sexual entertainment value, but in Jeff’s paintings, the women earn back their self respect. By gazing out and confronting the viewer, the women are able to remain self-empowered, despite the physical oppression of their bodies.” Make sure you check out the artists homepage, as well his Etsy shop where you can also find some prints.
