The 6th Annual 13th Hour Group show at Last Rites Gallery

On October 11th, the Last Rites Gallery in New York opened the 7th installment of their 13th Hour Group Exhibition. Last Rites is one of those galleries that I find myself awed at every show they host, and the 13th Hour shows are often the most awe inspiring. It is these shows that you not only see a diverse range of art, but you are looking at the some of the best artists that dark surrealism has to offer. As I scoured through this years offering, I found myself wanting to share every image from this show, and even learned of a few artists that I have not had my eye on before.

The 6th edition of this show features the work of Tom Bagshaw, William Basso, Nick Baxter, Dilka Bear, Paul Booth, Matt Buck, John Cebollero, Chrystal Chan, Crajes, Craww, Matt Dangler, Brian Despain, Thomas Dodd, Mark Elliot, Jacub Gagnon, Mark Garro, Jason Goldberg, Jessica Gordon, Naoto Hattori, Fay Helfer, Kelley Hensing, Robert Hernandez, Jeremy Hush, Jessica Joslin, JoKa, Sarah Joncas, Jean Labourdette aka Turf One, Eric Lacombe, Jed Leiknes, Matthew Levin, Brin Levinson, Eli Livingston, Ver Mar, Chris Mars, menton3, Vince Natale, Chris Peters, Dan Quintana, David Richardson, Paul Romano, David Stoupakis, Tin, Emma Tooth, Nicomi Nix Turner, Brian Viveros, Allen Williams, Daniel Williams, N.C. Winters, Hannah Yata, Vincent Xeus, and Kate Zambrano.

  • Holiday Giclée Show Extraordinaire @ Cotton Candy Machine

Tara McPherson’s Cotton Candy Machine in New York will now be making limited edition giclee prints for the artists there. To help celebrate this announcement, this Friday December 2nd the gallery will open the Holiday Giclée Show Extraordinaire, with some small and large format prints from Paul Pope, Esao Andrews, Travis Louie, Jeremy Hush, and Tara McPherson. All of the artists will be in attendance, and the first 20 purchases will receive a mini print (in store only). One of the prints by Travis Louie, Claire and her Forest Schnook, is based on one of the paintings from his most recent show. So this is a great opportunity to get a print from this new series of works.

  • Review: “Spirit Board” Group Show @ Articulated Gallery

On November 5th the Articulated Gallery in San Francisco opened the Spirit Board group show, curated by JL Schnabel. The show features a wide variety of artists all taking inspiration from the Ouija Board. Back in 20o8 Copro Gallery hosted Chet Zar’s “Taking Board” show and like many shows in Southern California, I wasn’t able to see the show in person. However, I do feel that the Ouija Board itself merits a few shows dedicated to it, so I was very happy to hear that Articulated would be hosting this show. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make the reception night; I heard that many artists were in attendance and it was quite a night. I did stop by he next day so I could see the show, and took some photos and made another video walkthrough.

  • “Speaking in Tongues” @ Black Vulture Gallery

Buddy Nestor put together an amazing show recently that opened at the Black Vulture Gallery on June 3rd. The artwork has not shown up on the gallery’s web page, however many of the works have shown up on BUddy’s own Facebook page. So I thought I would make it easier and show the work here. This is a very large group show, and features some outstanding work. Works by Cam Rackam, Brian Smith, Dan Harding, Apricot Mantle, Charlie Immer, Crystal Barbre, Dave Glass, Ewelina Ferruso, Isis Graywood, Kat Gun, Jessica Ward, Kristen Ferrel, JoKa, Jeremy Hush, Paul Romano, Lauren Rusignola, Peter Adamyan, and many more make up for a solid show. I am really hooked on the painting “Raphael Goes to Hell” by Lauren Rusignola (shown last). Of course I’m always a sucker for paintings that feature elements and themes from classical works of art, but the textures and style of this painting are amazing in itself.
