Since 2012, Allan Amato has been taking photographs of artists, and asking to reinterpret the portraits in their medium of choice. This collaboration is not only unique because it deals with the way in which the photographer sees his subjects, but how the artists themselves interpret and deal with the portrait of themselves. The artists did not compose the photograph, they are just working from it. It’s a great project and one of those exhibitions that must be seen in person. This exhibition marks the final footage to complete a documentary on the project, and Baby Tattoo will release a book mid-exhibition. As quoted in the press release “Rarely are we given an opportunity to confront our perceptions of reality and self; this exhibition will illuminate the universal tension between the pursuit of our vision and the demands of a critical and implacable world.”

Preview: La Luz de Jesus 25
La Luz de Jesus is turning 25 soon, and to celebrate the galleries is having a massive group show, featuring three generations of artists that have shown with the gallery. Not only have more than 200 artists submitted a work of art, but also a small anecdote about their experience with the gallery. There is no doubt that La Luz de Jesus has been a major force in this art scene, and has helped to push many artists into the spotlight. Along with the exhibition a book will be released, going over the past 25 years of the gallery and the surrounding art movements that helped it along. I know I say this quite a lot, but this is one of those shows that you should not miss. I firmly believe that all art should be seen in person, but how often do you get to see so many amazing artists in one show? Robert Williams, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Panter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Marion Peck, Owen Smith, Frank Kozik, Gail Potocki, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz, Laurie Lipton, Shag, Scott Musgrove, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Joe Sorren, Chris Mars, Eric White, The Pizz, Jessica Joslin, Gary Baseman, Bob Dob, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Jennybird Alcantra, Carrie Anne Baade, Ana Bagayan, Shawn Barber, Scott G Brooks, Matt Groening, Charlie Immer, Michael Hussar, and the list keeps going.
The show will be in two parts, with the first part opening on October 7th, and the second part opening November 4th. The entire show with all of the works from both parts is now online to view, so head on over after to preview and take a look. There is some outstanding work in this show. Preview: “Faces” by Glenn Barr @ La Luz de Jesus
Opening this Friday night, June 3rd at the La Luz de Jesus gallery is a new solo show and book release signing by Glenn Barr. The show is entitled “Faces”, which is also the name for Glenn’s new book. This new show “explores the images that permeate our collective consciousness and define the iconic”. Glenn used found wood materials instead of canvas, something he would do when he first started painting. This found wood has more personality, and goes along with this theme of creating images that permeate the mind. The book signing starts at 7pm, and the reception goes from 8-11pm. This is such an amazing show. The colors Glenn uses, as well as the mix of his stylized paintings and his more realistic works really help to make this a strong show.

“The Munsters” print by Richard J Frost
Richard J Frost created 4 paintings for the recent “Everything But the Kitschen Sync†(featured, reviewed) group show that took place at La Luz de Jesus, based on the characters from “The Munsters”. The paintings looked amazing, and Frost just released these images as a limited edition print. The print features all 4 characters on one 13″ x 17″ print, signed and numbered in an edition of 49. I do wish each character was one a separate piece of paper, but its still a killer looking print.

“Everything But the Kitschen Sync 14” @ La Luz de Jesus
Coming this March 4th at La Luz de Jesus is the 14 edition of the “Everything But the Kitschen Sync” group show. These group show started back in 18986 and focussed entirely on folk art. The show has now changed names a few times and evolved to encompass more of the best fine art, illustrative, and graphic design out there. New works by Michael Brown, JAW Cooper, Will Crane, Patrick “Star27” Deignan, Delphia, Robert Doucette, Caitlin Hackett, Scott Holloway, Richard Frost, Dennis Larkins, Danni Shinya Luo, Jon MacNair, Apricot Mantle, Junko Mizuno, Munk One, Scott Saw, Kim Scott, Sean Stepanoff, Bonni Read, Cate Rangel, Antonio Roybal, Celene Petrulak, Nathan Ota, Jessica Ward, James Zar, and many more will be on view. It’s an amazing show with a staggering amount of work to be seen. I especially like José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros Disney remix works, and Delphia’s “The Caul” (shown first) is easily one of my favorite works from this show. This exhibition will be up until march 28th, so if your in the area make sure to stop by.

“Faces” book by Glenn Barr
Coming this Spring from Last Gasp and La Luz de Jesus is a new hardcover book featuring the work of Glenn Barr. This new book is entitled “Faces” and as you can imagine is all about portrait work/figurative work. Here are a couple preview shot of what will be in the book. Once the book is ready to purchase we’ll have the new here, and hopefully if there us any signings planned.

Steven Daily’s “Covenant” @ La Luz de Jesus Gallery
On January 7th, La Luz de Jesus opened four solo shows, one of which was Steven Daily’s “Covenant”. Apricot Mantle stopped by the show, took some photos and was nice enough to write a review for the Creep. Take it away Apricot.If you have been following Art sites such as Arrested Motion and Daily duJour you have probably already read or seen the posts speaking of LA. Pop-surrealist Artist, Steven Daily’s latest body of work entitled ‘Covenant’. Steven’s new acrylic paintings depicting the ever so intriguing, shroud all that surrounds the dark world of the Freemasons. So I probably don’t need to bore you with more wordy details of artist statements and the like. Instead I would like to bore you with my first hand experience of going to La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Hollywood, CA the very night of the opening!
