As the end of the year slowly creeps in, there have been some outstanding shows and they keep on coming. This Friday, November 5th at La Luz de Jesus is a duo show with new works from Laurie Lipton and Jessica Joslin. The highly anticipated, and quickly selling, “Machine Punk” show by Laurie Lipton is inspired by the Steampunk craze, but Laurie has changed it a little and states that “my devices are mostly run by electricity and madness.” Jessica Joslin’s “Hybrids” show is a “circus of oddities, a mixed-media menagerie of unexpected creatures.” Both shows look amazing and are now online to view. If you are in the area, make sure to stop by as this work needs to be seen up close.

Christopher Ulrich “Illuminator: The Royal Wedding” @ La Luz de Jesus
Just this past Friday, August 6th at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery, an amazing show featuring new works by Christoper Ulrich opened up. Entitled “Illuminator: The Royal Wedding”, this solo exhibition, “Each piece in the series is designed to be its own portable temple marked and charged by the number 8”. The show features 16 paintings, 16 illustrated studies, 1 additional drawing, hidden notes, and 16 print editions. The prints are of the original 16 illustrated works and are each limited to a series of 12. Not only are the drawings expertly rendered showing Ulrich’s skills with graphite, but the oil paintings are even more impressive. Every inch of these works is filled with beautiful contrast, intense colors, and a perfect blend of inspiration from contemporary and classical works. I also liked the fact that each painting has its own custom made frame. Ornate frames chosen to fit with the paintings are great, but when the frame is designed specifically for the work or series of works, its just one more detail an artist can add to a show to really make a difference. It would be great to see these works in person, but for many the web will have to do. Make sure you check out the site, read the intro and digest every painting in this show.

“Four on the Floor” print by Michael Hussar
Birdbath Publishing has just released a new print by Michael Hussar. “Four on the Floor” is 15″ x 11″ on museum quality archival rag paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 88. The print also comes with a certificate of authenticity. The original, shown at the “Sweet Jesus” show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in 2004 was 12″ x 9″, so the print is a tad bigger.

Preview: Scott Holloway @ La Luz de Jesus
Opening up this Friday, August 7th at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery will be four solo shows with new works from Jessica Dalva, Scott Holloway, Misato Otake & Jasmine Worth. All four previews are up for viewing right now, but for this preview I wanted to focus on the artwork of Scott Holloway.
Scott’s exhibition is entitled “Memento Mori”, and “centers on the holy relics of Saints and biblical figures as highly detailed anatomical icons.” The drawings and mixed media works look like something right out of the anatomical studies of Da Vinci, but “with passages from the Bible and text from medical treatise, sprinkled with a bit of Surrealism.” in each one. The paintings show a skilled hand with oil paints, and each of the subjects surrounded by a treatment of gold leaf. “Visions of St. Luke” and “St. Luke’s Hand II” both are painted in frames that looked plucked right out of the Renaissance. Each one is aged and shows the effects of time, while the hands are clear and vibrant. St Luke “is the patron saint of Artists, Sculptors, and Physicians. The hand is his symbol.” To me this fusion of old worn in surfaces with the freshly painted icons is like connecting the old with the new, showing that many elements of the past can still be relevant today.
Like many, Scott showed talent and wanted to be an artist from a young age, but he wanted to learn painting in the style of the Northern Renaissance which included such artists as Robert Campin, Jan Van Eyck, Albrecht Durer and Hieronymous Bosch. I wish more were interested in drawing inspiration from the past as Scott has.
The works look amazing, and is definitely worth a look. Scott Holloway @ La Luz de Jesus
