The 2nd Annual Coaster Show at La Luz de Jesus

On September 5th, 2014, the 2nd Annual Coaster Show opened at La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles, CA. Each artist was supplied 4″ Tondo Coasters, courtesy of the fine people at L.A. Beer Week. The only rules they needed to follow, was that each piece must be a solitary work and must be priced $250 or less. Last year the show featured over 700 tiny works of art and this year they decided to outdo that by showcasing over 1000 works of art.

It’s easy to dismiss something as tiny as a beer coaster to be something that would allow for great art, but this years show—and last years to be honest—proved that tiny works of art can be just as exciting as larger works can. I love seeing what each artist was able to do with the limited area. Many artists stayed within the 4″ diameter, but I was happy to see that quite a few such as Peter Adamyan, Caitlin Anne Drop, Matthew Dutton, and Jeff Gillette, used the coaster as a support to create a larger 3-dimensional piece.

There are so may works in this show, it was pretty hard to choose a selection here to feature. I kept telling myself to not pick too may but then there would be another coaster I had to share. Lee Joseph has a great Flickr album (here) showing how the gallery went about installing this unique show. The exhibition runs until September 28th, so if you’re in the area make sure to stop by. Otherwise, take a look at our preview and then head over to the gallery’s homepage for the full show: 2nd Annual Coaster Show at La Luz de Jesus

  • “Profanity Pop” by José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros at La Luz de Jesus Gallery

“Profanity Pop” by José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros at La Luz de Jesus Gallery

Opening this Friday, August 1st, at La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles is a new solo show entitled “Profanity Pop” by José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros. As stated on the website “Mythology, Religion and the representation of power have manifested in all of the great works from antiquity. With Profanity Pop, Rodolfo pays tribute to specific historical works that have inspired many generations. Universal themes are once again narrated by beloved animated characters, but in the guise of the divine and with all the fragility of martyrs. Away from the paradise of happy endings, the pastel sprinkled drama takes on a vulnerability that juxtaposes subversively with situations never similarly interpreted.”

I believe this will be the third time Ontiveros will exhibit a series of works at the gallery. There will be a few works from previous shows, but the majority of paintings in this exhibition will be new. I love the tribute to Caravaggio’s The Incredulity of Saint Thomas, seen at the top. Here is a small preview of some of the works. New works by Allison ‘Hueman’ Torneros, JINX, Katherine Brannock, Frank Forte, and Sean Stepanoff will also have new works on view as the The Laluzapalooza Jury Winners. Take a look at the full show here, and if you are in the area make sure to stop by. This exhibition will run from August 1st – 31st, 2014.

Starting at 11am and going until 7pm, to give you some time to get ready for any Halloween parties, you can check out a huge amount of studies and finished paintings by the artist. Not only is this a great way to see the working process of Ulrich, via the many studies and sketches, but it’s kind of like a one day show featuring work from his “Illuminator” and “Demoneater” Series, “The Fourth Enochian Key”, “Pan’s Labyrinth” concept work, and paintings from various group shows he was in. Looking at all of this art is sure to get you even more excited for his upcoming solo show at La Luz de Jesus this December 7th, “The Reckoning”. As an art historian, the work of Ulrich is very exciting. So much of his work is filled with iconography, classic references, and it doesn’t hurt that his skill is Make sure you take a look at the sale online if you can’t make it in person, there are some really good deals such as “The first patron to buy two of the available Demoneater Doors will get one more for free, and will get their portrait painted into the centeral quattrain panel of the The Reckoning.” How cool is that?
