The 6th Annual 13th Hour Group show at Last Rites Gallery
On October 11th, the Last Rites Gallery in New York opened the 7th installment of their 13th Hour Group Exhibition. Last Rites is one of those galleries that I find myself awed at every show they host, and the 13th Hour shows are often the most awe inspiring. It is these shows that you not only see a diverse range of art, but you are looking at the some of the best artists that dark surrealism has to offer. As I scoured through this years offering, I found myself wanting to share every image from this show, and even learned of a few artists that I have not had my eye on before.
The 6th edition of this show features the work of Tom Bagshaw, William Basso, Nick Baxter, Dilka Bear, Paul Booth, Matt Buck, John Cebollero, Chrystal Chan, Crajes, Craww, Matt Dangler, Brian Despain, Thomas Dodd, Mark Elliot, Jacub Gagnon, Mark Garro, Jason Goldberg, Jessica Gordon, Naoto Hattori, Fay Helfer, Kelley Hensing, Robert Hernandez, Jeremy Hush, Jessica Joslin, JoKa, Sarah Joncas, Jean Labourdette aka Turf One, Eric Lacombe, Jed Leiknes, Matthew Levin, Brin Levinson, Eli Livingston, Ver Mar, Chris Mars, menton3, Vince Natale, Chris Peters, Dan Quintana, David Richardson, Paul Romano, David Stoupakis, Tin, Emma Tooth, Nicomi Nix Turner, Brian Viveros, Allen Williams, Daniel Williams, N.C. Black Rooster by John Cebollero

Black Rooster by John Cebollero Opening this Saturday, October 11th at the Last Rites Gallery is their annual group show “The 13th Hour”. As always there will be some inspiring artists showing new work, and we are lucky to have an exclusive preview of a new piece for the show by John Cebollero entitled “Black Rooster”. I chatted with John for a bit, and he gave us a quick writeup of what inspired this piece.
As time has gone by, I’ve wanted more of my “paintings” to be more spontaneous in their conception…….
Not so premeditated…..
The idea of sitting down and meticulously plotting out an image doesn’t appeal to me….
This image, for instance, was not drawn out first in pencil…..
I just painted a VERY rough indication with paint and fleshed it out from their….
What I’ve been trying to achieve is very much in the vein of Zdzislaw Beksinski.
Tormented souls exiled to a land of despair.
A place of sulfur & rot.
Where rot sets in before death. -

Work by Ana Bagayan, Angie Mason, Annie Owens, Anthony Pontius, Billy Norrby, Brian Despain, Brian Murphy, Buddy Nestor, Chris Mars, David MacDowell, David Stoupakis, Dan Harding, Ewelina, Fred Harper, Genevive Zacconi, Jason D’Aquino, Jason Levesque, Jason Limon, Jennybird Alcantara, Mia Araujo, Michael Mararian, Paul Booth, Scott G Brooks, Vincent Castiglia, and many more can be seen during this event. The gallery sent out 15 canvas panels to be sketched on, which were then in turn painted by a group of selected artists to be collaboratively painted on.
If you head to the galleries homepage you will see the finished painting, as well as the drawing that was originally made. I love collaborative works, and this show has some outstanding examples of how great they can be. For example Dave MacDowell’s “Paul Booth” drawing painted by Scott G Brooks and Mark Elliot, as well as Chris Mars’ drawing painted by Paul Booth & David Stoupakis.Check out the rest of the works: Last Rites x ArtFusion

New work and updates from Chris Mars
Chris Mars has updated his website with some new artwork, as well as news of upcoming shows and events. After checking out the new work, the next thing you need to do is go to the film/documentary section. There are two videos here showing time-lapse videos of Chris painting. It gives a great insight into how he works; such as the idea that it looks as though he is painting whatever comes to his head with no under-painting or drawing to speak of. I love how effortless the painting process looks in these videos, when the work itself is so intense. It just goes to show how talented he really is. Int he coming months Chris will have some art in some museums, such as Halle St. Pierre Sept 12, 2011 – March 4, 2012, Mesa Contemporary Arts Sept 9 – Sept 30, 2011, and again at Mesa from Sept 9th to Dec 4th, and finally the Museum of Fine Arts in Florida for a show entitled “Cute & Creepy” curated by Carrie Anne Baade opening October 7th. Along with the museum show, you can see some of Chris’ work at galleries such as Cave Gallery, Varnish Fine Art, and Last Rites Gallery. This information is all found on Chris’ homepage.
