Opening this Friday, March 9th at the Rotofugi Gallery is the latest solo exhibition from Ken Keirns. Entitled Quietly, this is the fourth solo show Ken will have the gallery; the previous one pretty much sold out each time. The reception is from 7-10 PM if your in the area, and the show runs until April 1st.
The Play Enterprise and Warhol Museum asked over 20 artist to reinterpret the classic bunny imagery. The show as first shown at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, but has been given a second go round at the Rotofugi Gallery. The participating list of artists is amazing: Jennybird Alcantara, Glenn Barr, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Brian Ewing, Jeremy Fish, Mike Giant, Ken Keirns, Jeremiah Ketner, Frank Kozik, Travis Lampe, Tara McPherson, Lisa Petrucci, Bonni Reid, Isabel Samaras, Andrew Schoultz, Jeremy Tinder, and many more. Many of the paintings look pretty spectacular, and fit the Playboy theme very well. I especially like Glenn Barr’s, Jeremy Fish, Tara McPherson, Keith Weesner, Ken Keirns, and Isabel Samaras all of which are shown below. Coming from Ken Keirns solo show “Dream Burn Down” at Rotofugi, a new print has been released. The print comes from his painting “Isolation”, and is 9″ x 12″, signed and numbered in an edition of 25. There is a limit of one per customer.

Opening up this Friday, May 21st at the Rotofugi Gallery is a solo show by Ryan Heshka. “Strange Powers (a BLAB! show)” will be the first time that Heshka exhibits at the gallery. The show is curated by Monte Beauchamp of BLAB!. I am excited to see some new work from Ryan, as I have always been a fan of his style. Opening this Friday, April 30th at the Rotofugi Gallery in Chicago is a dual show featuring new works from Ken Keirns and Jimmy Pickering. “Dream Burn Down” by Ken Keirns will have 14 new paintings on show, and “Beautiful Miasma” from Jimmy Pickering will have 40 new works, many of which are these great little 4″ x 6″ drawings called “Little Miasma”. If your in the area make sure to stop by, its going to be an amazing show. It runs until May 16th.

This past weekend at the Rotofugi Gallery, two solo shows opened up. “Wee Epic Masterpiece Theatre” by Travis Lampe and “Beneath the Noise” by Dan May. Both are amazing exhibitions, but for this post I am going to focus on Travis’ show. All of the works in this show, save for the two prints, are all inspired by classical works of art. For an art historian (in progress) like myself, this show is filled with all sorts of eye candy. Classical works of art such as: Géricault’s “The Raft of the Medusa”, Jaques-Louis David’s “The Death of Marat”, Sandro Boticelli’s “The Return of Judith”, and Caravaggio’s “Medusa” have all been re-imagined by Travis with his signature characters and vivid color scheme.
While classical works may be boring to some, the content is often filled with exciting stories, allegories and fables. All of which are worthy of being retold. It is these stories, the inner meaning of art that holds onto us and allows the art to function as much more than just something pretty to look at.
Head on over and take a look at the full show. This is such an amazing show. I also like that Travis created a silkscreened frame that would be used for multiple works.
On Friday October 16th, two new shows opened up at Rotofugi. “Fake it ’till you make it” by Martin Ontiveros and “The Devourer of Men” by Jeremy Tinder. The work shown from Jeremy Tinder will all be a part of a book being released in 2010, so not only is this a great chance to score some original art from Jeremy, but also art that is going to be a part of what looks like a very interesting book.
Both artists have very colorful styles. Martin seems to be using acrylic and inks on paper mounted on wood, and Jeremy is all acrylic on wood panel with display shelf. The shelf looks like a unfinished piece of wood attached to the bottom of the painting, kind of a cool effect.
I like Martin’s work, but I have been a big fan of Jeremy’s work for a while now and really like that his show pieces are all sequential, but you can buy a single piece and not worry that you are missing anything to go with it. A cool little bonus, is that when you purchase one of Jeremy’s painting your name “will receive a special thank you credit in “The Devourer of Men” book when it is published in Fall 2010.”

About 2 years ago, the very first Brush Project was started. The idea was that artists would send in used brushes, sign them and then the fans could score a great collectible while helping out a charity. It’s now time for Bush Project 2, this time hosted by Rotofugi, the charity is Gigi’s Playhouse, a Down syndrome awareness center. The auction is now in full swing, and will go until this Thursday, October 6th. The brushes will be on display until October 11th and then shipped to the new owner.
