    Scope Miami Beach 2014

Every year around the beginning of December, social media and blogs light up with previews of art that will be on exhibition at either Art Basel, or at the Scope Art Show in Miami, Florida. Along with the images of art, there are always a few articles here and there about why the art world is loathsome and even why this is the worst time to be an artist ever. While these articles touch on a few ideas that I do agree with, I still think great art is being made and even shown at these festivals. Street art is one good example; take a look at Streeartnews.net for some of the best murals created during the event.

The 6th Annual 13th Hour Group show at Last Rites Gallery

On October 11th, the Last Rites Gallery in New York opened the 7th installment of their 13th Hour Group Exhibition. Last Rites is one of those galleries that I find myself awed at every show they host, and the 13th Hour shows are often the most awe inspiring. It is these shows that you not only see a diverse range of art, but you are looking at the some of the best artists that dark surrealism has to offer. As I scoured through this years offering, I found myself wanting to share every image from this show, and even learned of a few artists that I have not had my eye on before.

The 6th edition of this show features the work of Tom Bagshaw, William Basso, Nick Baxter, Dilka Bear, Paul Booth, Matt Buck, John Cebollero, Chrystal Chan, Crajes, Craww, Matt Dangler, Brian Despain, Thomas Dodd, Mark Elliot, Jacub Gagnon, Mark Garro, Jason Goldberg, Jessica Gordon, Naoto Hattori, Fay Helfer, Kelley Hensing, Robert Hernandez, Jeremy Hush, Jessica Joslin, JoKa, Sarah Joncas, Jean Labourdette aka Turf One, Eric Lacombe, Jed Leiknes, Matthew Levin, Brin Levinson, Eli Livingston, Ver Mar, Chris Mars, menton3, Vince Natale, Chris Peters, Dan Quintana, David Richardson, Paul Romano, David Stoupakis, Tin, Emma Tooth, Nicomi Nix Turner, Brian Viveros, Allen Williams, Daniel Williams, N.C. • “Between Wind and Water”, Sarah Joncas and Caia Koopman @ Thinkspace

On June 16th, Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City opened a duo show with new work from Caia Koopman and Sarah Joncas entitled Between Wind and Water. Both artists have very different styles, but the show doesn’t look odd because of this. The last solo show that I remember seeing from Sarah Joncas was at Last Rites Gallery last April 2011. Taking a look at her personal website, you can see that she is going to have another solo show at Last Rites this coming December 2012. Her work seems to be getting a tad darker, and in some cases even a bit more erotic—these changes however are subtle. I do hope she keeps moving in this direction, or even one that would not be expected. Both artists submitted some top-notch work to this show, so take a look at the preview and then head over for the full show. There is also a good interview with Sarah Joncas over at the Sour Harvest blog.

  • “I Like Soup” Andy Warhol Tribute @ Virginia MOCA

Jason Levesque (aka Stuntkid) was asked to co-curate a group show along with Heather Hakimzadeh at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Each artist was asked to customize blank soup cans, and these new cans would be shown alongside an exhibit of works by Any Warhol. The show, entitled I Like Soup, featured work by Glenn Arthur, Luke Chueh, Dominique Fung, Charlie Immer, JoKa, Sarah Joncas, KozynDan, Elizabeth Levesque, Jason Levesque, Jason Limon, Jim Mahfood, Dan May, Soey Milk, Buddy Nestor, Charmaine Olivia, Conrad Roset, Casey Weldon, Chet Zar, and many more.

Each customized can is now online to view, and for every can that is sold the proceeds will go to help benefit MOCA’s educational programs and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Head on over to the site and check out all of the works, some of these cans are outstanding. JoKa and his toothpick painting style is always impressive, and Chet Zar Kozyndan, and Jason Levesque went all out and even added some sculptural elements to the cans.

  • Prisma Artist Collective

Back in October 2011, a small group of artists had the idea to create a collective online. The internet is a great place to get your work out there, but I have often heard from artists that a place to swap ideas, share stories, converse, and even help each other out is lacking. So this group of artists started the Prisma Collective, and now there is already over 25 active members: Mary Jane Ansell, Tom Bagshaw, Lindsay Carr, Hsiao-Ron Cheng, Leontine Greenberg, Nicole Gustafsson, Caitlin Hackett, Daria Hlazatova, Ruben Ireland (shown), Sarah Joncas, Nom Kinnear King, Alex Louisa, Rod Luff, Kit Lane, Jen Mann, Kelly McKernan, Lady Orlando, Lily Piri, Audrey Pongracz, Michael Shapcott, Kaspian Shore, Allison Sommers, Kelly Vivanco, Casey Weldon, and Bec Winnel. The site is very well laid out, easy to navigate and is ready to go with the content. Each artists has their own profile and gallery, a shop section filled with prints and originals, and a list of interviews with the artists that will be published soon.

  • The 13th Hour 4th Annual Group Show @ Last Rites

Just a few days before Halloween, on October 28th, Last Rites Gallery in New York opened the 4th annual group show The 13th Hour. The gallery is known for consistently showing the best in dark and surreal art, and the 13th Hour is a show that focuses on dark surrealist works from a broad variety of artists. This year the list of participating artists included: Shawn Barber, Matthew Bone, Paul Booth, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Jason D’aquino, Tom Gabriel Fischer, HR Giger, Fred Harper, Naoto Hattori, Michael Hussar, Joka, Sarah Joncas, Aunia Kahn, Michael Mararian, Chris Mars, Annie Owens, Chris Peters, Anthony Pontius, Dan Quintana, David Stoupakis, and many more.
Aside from the outstanding dark art shows the gallery opens month after month, I love the shows that feature dark works of art from artists that rarely contribute to these types of shows, and art from those you might not have expected, such as Self Deceased XXXII by Tom Gabriel Fisher — otherwise known as Tom Warrior of Celtic Frost fame and most recently Triptykon. Eli Livingston also created a sculpture, one that seems to be able to light up from the inside. leslie Ditto also created some prints from her painting Witching Hour, that might still be available from her Facebook page. If your in the area make sure to stop by and see these works in person, you have until November 27th. Otherwise the show is now online to view.

  • “I Want My Music Video Art Show” @ Meltdown Gallery

Opening tonight, October 7th, at the Meltdown Gallery in Los Angeles is a massive group show, over 100 artists, all taking inspiration from music videos for the first “I Want My Music Video Art Show” curated by Chris Marrs Piliero and Dave MacDowell. Artists such as Sarah Joncas, Aaron Jasinksi, Aunia Kahn, Apricot Mantle, Chet Zar, Dan Harding, Dan Quintana, Edith Lebeau, Jason D’Aquino, John Cebollero, Kelly Vivano, Larkin, Kolaboy, Nate Van Dyke, N.C. Winters, Paul Chatem, Scott G Brooks, Scott C, and many more have created art based on their favorite music videos. Oh, and yours truly also has a piece of art in this show (thanks to Dave for talking me into it). The reception starts at 8 PM and I have heard that a good majority of the artists will be there, so if you stop by make sure to say hi to the artists that made this show a must see. The exhibition will run until October 20th, so if you can’t make the reception you have a little bit of time to see the show.

I am very honored to be a part of this show, there is so many amazing artists. To be honest I was a little too nervous in the beginning and thought about not entering. I will stay with my original goal of this site and not show my work here, however I am proud of the piece and hope the viewers of the show enjoy it. Take a look the preview images of the show, and then check out the site below for some more images and video links.
