aotd: “Brittle”

This piece is by Nykolai Aleksander, it’s oil on canvas.

The first thing that struck me, well was that I thought this was a photo, it wasn’t until I zoomed in and saw how it was painted. The lack of color is amazing, the whole painting has this glow to it, much like some of the “flemish” underpainting techniques i’ve seen. It gives the painting this feel like a nice beautiful, contrasty photograph. Very striking.

I think my favorite area has to be the hair, it looks as though it was just some quick strokes of the brush, but it’s done in a way that really gives the impression of slightly messy hair.
