  • Naoto Hattori original for sale, “Krampus”

naoto_lg.gifThis painting was featured in the “Krampus and Christmas” show at the Copro Nason Gallery a while back. There were a lot of really great paintings at the show, this being one of my favorites.

The seller stated that Naoto pieces are usually all sold out. Now many times sellers say this and it isn’t true, especially about prints. But in this case it is true, I can’t think of many times I see his work sold by the original buyers.

Naoto has a crazy style, his work is always a blast to look at and never gets old.

I have had this artist in my list to share for a bit now, about time I share the work right?

This piece is from Walker-Ballantyne-Hill, an illustrator out of Canada with a great style. I like how you can see the wood grain through some of the paint, although I do wish the grain was more extravagant. I think a more intricate grain could add that final punch. She uses a wide variety of tools on each of her works: gauche, ball point pens, tempera and markers. With her style of drawing she is sure to fit right in with the likes of Joshua Taylor and maybe even Zoso.

  • Some artist websites updated

constantlywithin.jpgA few artists that I have been watching and that I have shown here have updated their websites.

The first one is Dean MacDowell (shown), an artist out of Ireland that has a really great style. Along with the new website he also has a shop selling some prints of his work. I think that Dean’s website is a really good example of how an artists site should be clean and simple. The paintings are the focus here. When he wanted to add some flair to the site, he did it with the logo.

Next is John Kolbek that I have featured here a while back. He has a new site as well, and also a prints area. John’s site isn’t as minimal as Dean’s is, but still quite easy to move around in. I like that he didn’t use a flash gallery.

Lastly is photographer Jeremy Brotherton. I think whats most amazing about his site, is that it’s actually a few “blogger” pages linked together. He found a way around having to get a domain name and space to hold the site. So he has a portfolio section, how to section, contact and links. His ingenuity really showed that you can have a portfolio site if your just willing to try something different.

  • Shooting Gallery “Sundance X” group show

paulchatem.jpgShooting Gallery will be having a show at the Sundance festival entitled “Sundance X”. It opens this saturday in Park City, Utah.

The show will feature work by Shawn Barber, Anne Faith Nichols, Joshua Petker, Kukula, Stella Im Hultberg, Mike Maxwell, Paul Chatem, Travis Louie, Kris Lewis and I guess some surprise artists.

If you head over to the site now you can see some of the work. I really love the piece by Kris Lewis, I can’t think of a painting of his that hasn’t blown me away. Paul Chatem (shown) as well. I got hooked on his work when it was still minimal as far as the feel of the paintings went, he is getting more and more exciting with all the action going on in each piece.

Check out the show here: Sundance X

  • Lithium Picnic Limited poster sized photo

apnea.jpgTo help with the growing cost of the ridiculous lawsuit against Philip Warner by the “saints” over at Suicide Girls, Philip is offering up some killer limited edition poster sized prints.

These prints are not signed or numbered, but are limited to 100 and are a huge 20″x30″. There will be a new one coming out every month while the trial goes on, let’s hope that isn’t long. The print shown is the first one to be sold so head on over if you want to pick one up.

If your like me and have limited wall space left, you can also head over and pick up one of his smaller photo prints. The prints are either 9″x12″ or 11″x14″ and you have a huge variety to choose from.

  • How to Throw a DIY art show that doesn’t suck

How to Throw a DIY art show that doesn’t suck

Here is an article that was submitted by Molly Crabapple, artist, writer, and creator of the very cool Dr.Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. If there is anyone with the knowledge to help make your art shows more of a success than they normally are, it’s Molly.

Like many artists, you may be tired of waiting for a gallery to sweep you off your feet. You’ve sent your slide packets, you’ve written artist your statements, and you’ve received only discouraging silence in return.

At this point, like many artists, you decide to grab fate by the balls. Why wait for a gallery to notice you when there’s wall space in the local cafe or club, practically begging to be filled. So, with courage and a portfolio, you approach the proprietor. And, unlike those galleries, he’s overjoyed. Of course you can have a show!

You go home, head buzzing with visions of selling your artwork, and telling that gallery to go jump in a lake. But why is it that for all their promise, shows in non-traditional venues so often end in failure?

Bad publicity, bad communication, and lack of confidence. And, using examples from my own life (some happy, some less so), I’m going to give you a roadmap for making sure your DIY exhibition ends in sweet victory, rather than my cheap-gin tears of defeat.

Todays piece is from an illustrator that was born in Kiev, Ukraine and is now living in the midwest. Tanya Pshenychny a great style of drawing and really knows how to control watercolor. She really builds up the watercolor to come up with these dynamic images that I don’t always see when someone works with watercolors.

Along with illustration she also makes these great hand-bound sketchbooks. It’s always good as an artists to have loads of sketchbooks around and ready to be filled. I also like to have some really high quality ones, they often cost more but these are the ones you want to fill with your top notch work. Or take one with you on a vacation. Head on over to check out her site and maybe pick up one of her cool Skullfly sketchbooks.

  • Now Online: Viner, Remmers, Ben Tour & Stan Lee

bloodline_framed_thumb.jpgSome really great shows are now online for your viewing pleasure. All shows that are viewable online will go in this new section.

First is Jonathan Weiner’s solo show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery. He is such an amazing painter and his new work is spectacular. All of the works are also massive in size. The one shown is 48″ x 36″. You can also check out a duo show of Esao Andrews and Xiaoqing Ding. I really dig the work of Esao, the contrast and colors are very amazing.

Then at the Copro Nason gallery you can check out Joey Remmers. He was just featured in the new art magazine “Stretching Canvas” that is put out by the same folks that give us International Tattoo Art magazine. It’s an excellent new mag so be sure to pick one up. You can see a taste of Remmers work in the mag and some of the same works at the gallery.

At Gallery 1988 in L.A, the Stan Lee tribute show is up as well. The show features some really great work. Much like the Crazy4Cult and I am 8 Bit shows that 1988 puts on, this one is also filled with a huge variety of art coming from all sorts of artists. My favorite piece of this show has to be the Craola piece.

Finally my favorite show of the bunch is the solo show of Ben Tour. This show is at the Fifty24 Gallery in San Francisco. I was able to check out the show in person and am now even more hooked on his work. The pictures of the work on the site are great, but nothing compared to seeing the art in person. His work is so intense and so detailed that I was shocked. If you love energetic, textural work than look no further than this.
