  • “Go East” exhibition with Lebasse Projects

For a three day only exhibition, November 5-7th, Lebasse Projects will take the artists that are the heart of the gallery and bring them to the east coast. This marks the first in what will hopefully be many global exhibitions, giving everyone a chance to see work from artist such as Yoskay Yamamoto, Tessar Lo, Edwin Ushiro, Joao Ruas, Eric Fortune, Mia, and Nate Frizzell.
I have always felt that the best way to view art is in person. It is quite hard when the gallery is across the country or in another country for that matter, so this show will be a great opportunity for the fans in New York to check out these amazing works of art. For those of us that are still stuck checking out the work online, here is a small preview and a link to the full one.

  • Artist Profiles: John Larriva

If you have been reading the site for a while you might remember a painting I showed as art of the day from John Larriva. Since that first post John has been releasing some really great oil paintings. Along with his homepage, John also has a profile on Deviantart, and an etsy shop filled with original paintings and prints. The “Lithium Lynn” original painting that I featured last year is available in the store. I really love how brushy and energetic his paintings are.

Head on over to his webiste to see more work, and make sure to stop by his Etsy shop: John Larriva @ Etsy

  • Andrew Brandou @ Corey Helford Gallery

Andrew Brandou’s second solo show at the Corey Helford Gallery opened this past Halloween weekend. This new solo show is entitled “In the Garden of the Mystic” and will be up until November 18th if you want to stop by and check it out. I have enjoyed Andrew’s work for quite some time now. His style is very reminiscent of the art that surrounded me as a child, so I was hooked on the work the moment I saw it.
The new abstract character designs really stood out. I have seen a few artists try this in the past year and none seemed to have pulled it off as elegantly as Andrew has. The pictures don’t show it very well, but most of these new paintings have either gold leaf, or gold sumi ink in them. I absolutely love the linework seen in these paintings. Along with the abstracts, some of the maze style pieces that were seen in his “Mind Manors” show at the Milieu Galerie/Artspace in Bern, Switzerland are also present. Here is the statement from the gallery:

Influenced by 1960’s posters, music and psychedelia, Brandou’s new work takes a walk on the wild side and a more organic narrative ensues. The artist’s iconic flower motifs, skulls, bunnies and boxes transform into a kaleidoscope of stunning psychonautic imagery. Ornate gold leaf accents decorate mind-expanding dreamscapes where the ego merges into the id, fear is released and beauty resides. The exhibition will also include a rare series of limited-edition silkscreens on wood block based on vintage rock posters.

  • H.R. Giger, creator of the Alien still annoyed with Hollywood

    Pilot-by-giger
Found this article over at National Post. It’s the 30th Anniversary of one of Giger’s most interesting creations, yet from what the article states, Giger is still upset with how Hollywood treated him. It’s not surprising to learn that any artist is treated a certain way when it comes to the movie business. Whenever a franchise becomes a money maker, any artistic integrity goes out the window. It is sad to learn that Giger could have contributed far more to the movie industry. I have always loved his work and would have loved to see him develop characters and environments for more movies.

I’m attaching the article here, just in case it disappears from the original site.

  • Happy Halloween

I hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween. I just remembered that last year I made a little image for those that don’t have costume ideas, like myself at the time. So if you have a good printer you can print out this Creep Machine paper face mask and relive the good ol days when you were a kid and had crummy costumes. Maybe that was just me though.

  • Artist Profiles: Jason Goad

Jason Goad is an illustrator out of Ohio. He is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design, and has done work for such clients as Mattel/Hot Wheels, Alternative Press, Warped Tour, The Giant Peach, Alamo Drafthouse, The Lonestar Rollergirls and many more.
One of the things that really got me hooked on his art is his drawing style; that cross hatching he does is insane. He just posted some new work for a Halloween show at C2 Gallery that I had to share. His work is not usually this dark, but it fits with the mood. Make sure you head over to his homepage to see the rest of his art, you will not regret it.

  • Art of the Day: “Death is a Messy Bizness” by Dan Harding

Dan Harding just shared a new painting that he will have in a group show coming this December. The show is at the Hyaena Gallery in Burbank, CA and is entitled “Kill Your Idols”. I think it’s a great idea to push past the artists that inspired you, and use the painting to show that you are moving forward with your style and taking in new influences. Here is the painting Dan is submitting, after the jump take a look at some of the paintings that inspired this one, as well as a statement from Dan about the piece.

  • “Jason Gets Ahead” print by Ray Frenden

With the Halloween weekend right around the corner, I have had my eyes peeled for spooky art (even more than usual). One of the recent prints I found is from Ray Frenden, a self taught illustrator with an amazing style. Pretty much most of his work is inspired by monsters and the macabre, but it also filled with some intense colors. The print shown has a bit of a more muted color palette than he uses, but fits the scene perfectly. “Jason Gets Ahead” is an open edition print on 100% cotton rag paper, and comes in three sizes starting at $25.
