  • Poster Peep Show: The Art of the Pinup @ Gallery Nucleus

In celebration of the pin up girl, Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, CA opened an outstanding group exhibition this past February 5th entitled “Poster Peep Show: The Art of the Pinup”. In homage to such pin up masters as Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas, the gallery has put toegther an amazing list of classic and contemporary artists. Works from Marcelo Dadolce, Olivia De Berardinis, Shane Glines, Bill Presing, Rockin’ Jelly Bean, Marguerite Sauvage, Stuntkid, Francis Vallejo and many more can be seen on the website now. I especially like the series of watercolor portraits Olivia did of Marilyn Monroe, it shows how skilled and consistent her style is. A few of the works were also made into giclee prints, such as Rockin Jelly Bean’s “Evil Valentine” (shown first).

If you are a long time reader of the site, the name Dean McDowell is a familiar one. He had works in not only the “Attack of the B Movie Show“, but the “This is the End” group show as well. He recently got his homepage running again, has been featured on a bunch of art sites around the net, and most importantly has some new work to share. Makes sure you check out Dean’s new homepage, and follow him on the various social networks.

  • “The Mad Potters Tea Party” @ Strychnin gallery

This past Friday, February 4th, Strychnin Gallery opened of the more unique shows I have seen in a while. “The Mad Potters Tea Party” features custom designed ceramics from over 100 international artists. Limited edition plates, teapots, vases, teacups and saucers created by artists such as Chris Mars, Ray Caesar, KRK Ryden, Caitlin Hackett, David Stein, Seymour, David Stoupakis, Camilla d’Errico, Kristen Ferrell, Bethany Marchman, Jason Jacenko, David Hochbaum, Saturno Buttò, Martina Secondo Russo, Ver Mar, Scott Holloway, Edith Lebeau, Brian Horton, and many more. I thought it was a great idea when some limited edition cups and saucers were released by UK’s This is Limited Edition, and most of these sets of long since sold out. The ceramics seen here at Strychnin are far more limited and unique. Chris Mars for example has created some round, plate style paintings before (featured), however I was really surprised to see how amazing his works looks on a Durham vase and Teapot. Make sure you check out this show after you look at the preview images.

  • “The Great Showdowns” by Scott C @ Gallery 1988

Gallery 1988 in Melrose opened the latest solo show of Scott Campbell this past Friday, February 4th, entitled “The Great Showdowns”. If you have been following Scott C’s Tumblr, “Great Showdowns” then this show is really just a gathering of work that has been posted for the past few weeks. It is pretty staggering to see how much work there is, and how many movies that Scott C addresses in these works. From what I have been told the work is selling very well, and it is the most popular movies that are selling the best. Scott’s drawing is very consistent and fluid, I do hope that people take the time to look at the “showdowns” from movies they are less familiar with and see how great Scott is at making these showdowns look amazing. The full preview should be online in the next few days.
