  • Preview: “Twin Peaks; Fire Walk With Me” Group Show @ Copro Gallery

Opening this Saturday, April 21st, at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica is a new group show entitled Twin Peaks; Fire Walk With Me
    20th Anniversary Group Art Exhibition
. A year ago in February, Clifton’s Brookdale hosted In the Trees: Twin Peaks 20th Anniversary Art Exhibition, which had some amazing artwork (seen here), and many of he artists from that round will be seen in this latest exhibition. Martin Wittfooth, Glenn Barr, Chris Berens, Brett Amory, Chris Mars, Dan May, Chris Buzelli, Billy Norrby, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Esao Andrews, Lori Earley, Brian Viveros, Ryan Heshka, Scott C, Chet Zar, Paul Chatem, Stella Im Hultberg, and many more.

There is some very strong work in this exhibition, I was especially intrigued with the paintings by Billy Norrby, Glenn Barr, and Dan Quintana. Stella Im Hultberg submitted another beautiful painting, and I was happy see a landscape by Chris Peters. The stand out piece for me was Deliverance by Lori Earley (seen first). I was a great surprise to see Lori submit a digital painting that had some oil, acrylic, and mixed media embellishments to it. The more I looked at it I could see her style peek out, but the overall work is a new direction that I really hope she continues with. During the reception there will be a limited edition print available of this painting, un-embellished, signed and numbered in an edition of 20. This is bound to be a mind-blowing exhibition, so if your in the area make sure to stop by, otherwise check out the preview images and then over to the website.

  • Review: Obey Your Master Art Tribute to Metallica

This past weekend a group show dedicated to the music of Metallica opened at the Exhibit A Gallery. While I was not able to attend the show, friend of the Creep Machine Brennan was able to make it to the show, take some photos, and write a short review for us. Take it away.

So a few weeks ago I received an email about an invite only show coming up at Exhibit A Gallery here in Los Angeles. It was for a show entitled Obey Your Master and was going to be a group show with artists paying tribute to one of the greatest metal bands of all time, Metallica. The list of participating artists was a who’s who of the current art scene. You had everyone from Travis Louie to Shawn Barber and Sylvia Ji to Shepard Fairey all with pieces re-interpreting some Metallica songs into art. I was obviously very stoked to be able to attend this show, and it did not disappoint at all.

Opening this Saturday, January 21st at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica is the latest installment of the Conjoined group show curated by Chet Zar. This show focuses on sculpture and 3-dimensional art by Colin Christian, Scott Musgrove, Kevin Kirkpatrick, Christopher Conte, Dave Pressler, John Cebollero, Charles Kraft, David Richardson, Paul Chatem, Jacob Roanhaus, Zombienose, Joe Sorren, Scott Radke, Shiflett Bros, Ron English, Chet Zar, Neil Winn, and many more.

It’s not often one gets to see so many 3-dimensinal works in one show, especially when all of the art is so amazing. If you are in the area make sure you stop by. While art always looks better in person, sculptures are one of those medium that really need to be seen in person to fully enjoy the space in which they occupy.

I am very honored to be a part of this show, there is so many amazing artists. To be honest I was a little too nervous in the beginning and thought about not entering. I will stay with my original goal of this site and not show my work here, however I am proud of the piece and hope the viewers of the show enjoy it. • Interview: Paul Chatem

    Interview: Paul Chatem

Back in May I reviewed Paul Chatem’s latest solo show “Island of the Colorblind”, and ever since then I had the plan to interview Paul and get a deeper look into his working process, what inspires him, and how he deal with being colorblind. Of course it took a lot longer than I thought to get this interview going, but luckily for me Samantha Levin came to rescue and helped out with the interview, coming up with some great questions and acquiring the images you see below. So this is the very first dual-interview here on the Creep Machine, and I think it worked out very well. Perhaps we will see more in the future. Make sure to click the “read more” for the full interview.

Creep: In order to create this latest series of interactive works, you learned an entirely new skill: clock making. This has given your works an extremely unique element to them, and added audience participation. Did you have any other ideas to create interactivity aside from the clock style works of art?

Paul Chatem: I’ve read a bit about clock making as well as gear ratios. Clock making is more complicated than what I’m doing. I’m just using the basics of gears or cogs to create a kinetic aspect to my paintings. At this point the movement in the gears has been pretty simple, there’s still a lot of things I need to learn so I can take it to the next level.
