On Saturday, April 9th, the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco opened the first solo show of Paul Chatem. Paul has shown quite a few times at the gallery, but always alongside another artist such as Mike Maxwell. This time it is all new artwork, and continues his new kinetic, interactive paintings and brings them to a new level. The show is entitled “Island of the Colorblind”, a title that was inspired by Oliver Sacks book of the same name. Ever since Paul’s past shows at the gallery, and the work that has popped up in group shows, I have been waiting to see this new solo exhibition. I Made sure to be there on the reception night, take some photos, talk to Paul about his work and inpsirations, and even made a little video to show those fans that cant make it to the show how the paintings work. Click the “read more” link for the full review and photos.

The show opened at 8pm and already had a good amount of people looking at the art. The gallery space, which is narrow, makes it a bit hard to take photos of the work if there is too many people in the gallery. Luckily for me, I had some time to take pics of the work before it got too packed. The lighting in this gallery always makes for great photos and with the intricacy, textures, and colors Paul’s paintings have, you want good light to really draw these works in. (more…)

“Island of the Colorblind” by Paul Chatem @ Shooting Gallery
Opening this Saturday, April 9th, is a new solo exhibition of works by the always amazing Paul Chatem. This new show is entitled “Island of the Colorblind” and will feature some new paintings, and if they are anything like his last couple of shows “The Death of Bighead” (featured) at the Cave Gallery and “Rock, River, Bones” (featured) that took place at the Dialect Gallery, fans are in for some mind-blowing art. Paul has always had a colorful, nostalgic, and unique style, but now that he has been creating interactive, movable works of art, these shows are not to be missed. It’s not often patrons are encouraged to touch the art hanging on gallery walls. Along with this new solo show, Paul’s homepage has also be redesigned. So head on over and take a look, and there is even a video that will get you prepared for this new series.

“Things to Come” group show @ Bold Hype Gallery
Bold Hype Gallery has just revamped their website. The design is clean, and very easy to move around. Along with this new site, there is also a group exhibition going on that is worth seeing. The show is entitled “Things to Come…”: Visions of the future, dark and bright, featuring the work of 25 artists such as Doug Boehm, Chris Buzelli, Paul Chatem, R.S. Connett, Brendan Danielsson, Bob Dob, Charlie Immer, Jason Limon, Dan May, Heiko Muller, Nathan Ota, Shaunna Peterson, Chris Ryniak, Scott Scheidly, Joe Scarano, Jim (Ojimbo) Sheely, Allison Sommers, Nathan Spoor and more. I really love the pianting by Charlie Immer (first), he has such an amazing ay of painting something so morbid, but so colorful and almost happy at the same time.

River, Rock, Bones by Paul Chatem @ Dialect gallery
This past Wednesday, September 8th at the Dialect Gallery in Los Angeles, Paul Chatem’s latest solo show opened up. Entitled “River, Rock, Bones” this new exhibition features a handful of new paintings, that feature the same movable, clock-like additions his previous works have had. The show looks amazing, I really wish I was able to see the work in person. It doesn’t look like the full show is on the galleries page yet, but Paul did add some images to his Facebook profile that can be seen here.

Art Whino new website and sale
Art Whino has just launched a new version of their homepage. If you remember the last page it was pretty much all flash based, which I am not a fan of, but this new version is back to html. I know animations and effects are fun, but simpler sites are easier to see on mobile devices, easier to move around in, and most importantly allow the viewer to focus on the most important thing; the art! There is also a new store layout, that allows you to browser by artist, see new arrivals, or use the search field to find what you are looking for.
For all the fans of the Creep Machine, Art Whino has supplied a special code, “whinoslovecreeps”, that if you use from now until May 16th you can get anything in the shop for 10% off. Looking around there is some amazing work to be had, such as “Headlong Buckle Buster” by Paul Chatem (shown).
