  • “Motion” by Erik Jones at Hashimoto Contemporary

“Motion” by Erik Jones at Hashimoto Contemporary

Erik Jones opened his debut solo show “Motion” on July 5th at Hashimoto Contemporary, a new gallery by Spoke Art’s Ken Harman. This show features a new series of works that “investigates form, both abstract and figurative, through a unique combination of hyperrealism and geometric expressionism.” Each painting employs the use of materials such as colored pencils, acrylics, oils, and wax pastel. Even in the photos seen below the texture of these materials is present, and is a nice juxtaposition against the photorealistic models intwined in color and abstract geometric patterns. I was happy to see that not only was there work with figurative elements, but also some abstract pieces that centered around color and shapes.

I would have loved to see this show in person, but I imagine after such a strong debut show, this is not the last time we will see Erik Jones showing work at this gallery. Keep with up with new work, prints, and social updates on Erik’s homepage Theirison.com, and check out the rest of “Motion” here: Erik Jones @ Hashimoto Contemporary

  • Casey Weldon’s “New World Hoarder” @ Spoke Art

On June 7th, Spoke Art in San Francisco opened the highly anticipated solo show New World Hoarder by Casey Weldon. Fans of Casey’s work have seen him release some outstanding painting in a variety of group show across the country; I was even lucky to have Casey submit a painting to the Marvelous Humans Group show that took place at the Articulated Gallery in San Francisco. This is Casey’s debut solo show in the Bay Area, and features more than 20 new paintings. Not only does Casey have a unique style, but the color palettes he uses to bring these worlds into view are always electric and surreal. Along with the new works by Casey Weldon, Peter Adamyan also has a mini show at the gallery entitled Back Room Cinema. Head on over to the Spoke Art homepage to see the full shows.

Opening tonight at the Venice location of Gallery 1988, will be a duo show with new work from Kirk Demarais & Dave MacDowell. In the oast few weeks Dave has been painting like crazy, and has created some outstanding work. He currently has a couple of pieces on view at the Synergy, Thinkspace Curated show currently on view at Spoke Art in San Francisco.

This new series of works features Dave’s unique blend of pop culture mashing, and his never-ending ability to create paintings that are sure to make you smile, laugh, and be come jealous that you didn’t think of it first. The shows features a good amount of Big Lebowski inspired paintings, some music references, and Dave even revisits a painting, Freaky Friday, from the first show I ever curated with his new Deebo of the Dead. • Review: “Finding Together Again” by Nimit Malavia @ Spoke Art

On Thursday Night, April 6th, Spoke Art in San Francisco opened a new solo exhibition by Nimit Malavia entitled Finding Together Again. The past couple of weeks had been nothing but work, so being able to see new drawings by a outstanding artist such as Nimit, was good news indeed. For this reception, Spoke Art gave away free mini-prints to the first 100 attendees. There was a good amount of people there for reception; each person scored a free print without having to fight for them. Nimit showed up shortly after opening, and I was able to ask him a few questions about his process and other projects.

I have been a fan of Nimit’s work for quite a while now, and had talked to him a few times before but mainly about print releases and preview pics for shows. I took this opportunity to get a look into his working process, and how he creates these breath-taking images. I had always assumed that the line work in Nimit’s drawings were made using a micron or similar style of pen, but learned after the thumbnail and sketches are created, and then blown up for the final piece, every line you see is created with a tiny brush and ink. He said he just keeps drawing until his hand can’t move anymore; in the piece seen below Remus and Romulus, he put over 100 hours into it. For the painted pieces, Nimit will use watercolors to do light washes, and then finish up with acrylic washes, as seen with the two pieces that had gold-leaf embellishments. One of the smaller painted drawings was all acrylic washes, and the contrast was more intense, so you can see the difference in those that had a more mixed-media style to them.

  • Tom Doyle’s “Unreal Estate” @ Spoke Art

Opening tonight, February 2nd, at Spoke Art in San Francisco is the first solo show of Texas illustrator and print-maker extraordinaire Tim Doyle. Entitled Unreal Estate, the show features prints based on locations found in pop culture such as Arrested Development, The Simpsons, Sopranos, and more. Along with the standard prints there will also be variants, and for those that started lining u early, there will be a a free print based on All in the Family given to the first 100 people. I imagine the line is already making its way down the street, so if you want to grab that free print, or just make sure you get one of the other prints head down there now. The reception is from 6-10 PM. Otherwise you can see the full show online over at Spoke Art. There is also a great writeup about the work in this show over at Nakatomi Inc.

  • Prints: “Jimi vs. the MPC” by Casey Weldon @ Spoke Art

Spoke Art has just released a new limited edition print by Casey Weldon. Entitled Jimi VS/ the MPC, this painting was first seen at the I Want My MTV Music Video show (previewed) that took place last year. This is such a killer painting, not only because it’s a great spoof on an iconic image of Jimi Hendrix, but long before I created this site I was completely immersed in electronic music and the gear associated with it. The MPC was the staple sequencer for many musicians, and the complaints I would often hear is how lifeless drum machine/sequencers are. So to have Jimi, a guitar player that was so intense of full of life, to be burning up this machine is a great addition for gear geeks like myself.
Anyway, the print is a generous 18″ x 24″, signed and numbered in an edition of 35. It also has hand deckled edges and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
