In the past few years I have seen the Krampus gain popularity here in the US. For those not familiar with this story, the Krampus is based in Alpine Folklore and is a companion to Saint Nicholas. While most of the kids in the US grew up with stories of getting a lump of coal and no presents if you had been bad that year, Austrian children would be warned that the Krampus would come and punish them, or even kidnap them if they had been bad. The hairy, horned, hoofed, and long-tongued figure, is perfect for inspiring new works of art. Crazy 4 Cult: New York
The sixth annual Crazy 4 Cult group show opened this past week; the big change is that this time around it is in New York. There is a new lineup of artists with a good mix of new and returning favorites. Looking around the net there are stories of the long lines, people camping out to see the show, and an overall amazing night of art and cult movie entertainment. Just a handful of the artists that graced the show this year are Aaron Jasinksi, Allison Sommers, Casey Weldon, Cate Rangel, Chris B Murray, Dabs Myla, Fred Harper, Jason Edmiston, Lora Zombie, Sam Wolfe Connelly, and Travis Louie.

Gag Me With A Toon 4 @ WWA Gallery
This past Saturday on March 27th, the 4th Annual Gag Me With Toon group show opened at the WWA Gallery. This installment features more Saturday morning cartoon madness from many of your favorite artists. This years show is curated by Steven Daily and Tomi Monstre. Preview: Dark Pop 4 Group Show @ Last Rites Gallery
Opening this Saturday, March 3rd, is the 4th annual Dark Pop group exhibition at Last Rites Gallery. This year the show is curated by Gary Pressman and has a very impressive list of artists; Alexandra Pacula, Ana Bagayan, Annie Owens, Becca, Brian Despain, Cathie Bleck, Charles Wish, Chrystal Chan, Dark Vomit, Dave MacDowell, Eric Alos, Eric Richardson, Francesco De Molfetta, Isabel Samaras, Jennybird Alcantara, Joe Vaux, John Brophy, Mark Elliott, Mark Garro, Mascorro, Matt Dangler, Matthew Grabelsky, Niagara, TIN, Travis Lampe, Travis Louie, and Yoko d’Holbachie. This year has some amazing pieces in it, such as Black End by Joe Vaux, Enlightenment by Chrystal Chan (one of three she has in the show), and Witching Hour by John Brophy. Prints: “Sarah & Emmett” by Travis Louie from Pressure Printing
Pressure Printing has just released the first print for the new year. Sarah & Emmett by Travis Louie was first seen at his solo show @ Copro Nason entitled Strange Grooming Habits. Pressure Printing went all out for this print, and not only embossed and stained the paper, but also took into account how Travis’ work looks like under domed glass. So they used a $1000 domed brass plate to help add a bit of the feel from the original into this print (see the whole process). This 9.5″ x 13″ intaglio print is on handmade Twinrocker paper, antiqued with walnut ink and watercolors, embossed, and signed and numbered in an edition of 50. Each print also comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Review: Obey Your Master Art Tribute to Metallica
This past weekend a group show dedicated to the music of Metallica opened at the Exhibit A Gallery. While I was not able to attend the show, friend of the Creep Machine Brennan was able to make it to the show, take some photos, and write a short review for us. Take it away.
So a few weeks ago I received an email about an invite only show coming up at Exhibit A Gallery here in Los Angeles. It was for a show entitled Obey Your Master and was going to be a group show with artists paying tribute to one of the greatest metal bands of all time, Metallica. The list of participating artists was a who’s who of the current art scene. You had everyone from Travis Louie to Shawn Barber and Sylvia Ji to Shepard Fairey all with pieces re-interpreting some Metallica songs into art. I was obviously very stoked to be able to attend this show, and it did not disappoint at all.

Holiday Giclée Show Extraordinaire @ Cotton Candy Machine
Tara McPherson’s Cotton Candy Machine in New York will now be making limited edition giclee prints for the artists there. To help celebrate this announcement, this Friday December 2nd the gallery will open the Holiday Giclée Show Extraordinaire, with some small and large format prints from Paul Pope, Esao Andrews, Travis Louie, Jeremy Hush, and Tara McPherson. All of the artists will be in attendance, and the first 20 purchases will receive a mini print (in store only). One of the prints by Travis Louie, Claire and her Forest Schnook, is based on one of the paintings from his most recent show. So this is a great opportunity to get a print from this new series of works.

Preview: “Curious Pets” x Travis Louie @ Merry Karnoswky Gallery
Opening Saturday, November 12th at the Merry Karnoswky Gallery in Los Angeles is the latest solo show from Travis Louie entitled “Curious Pets”. These new works focus on not only the characters in the paintings, but their unusual pets as well. As always each painting comes with a story, and you can see a few of these over at Travis’ blog such as the hilarious story of Oscar and the Truth Toad(Ted) (shown first). We have seen Travis paint animal-influenced portraits before, but the idea of people and their pets is a new direction. Just by looking at the few preview images he posted on his blog, this show is going to be something you don’t want to miss.
