  • Travis Louie’s Curious Pets

    Travis Louie will be opening an exhibit of new paintings at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles this coming November 12. Travis got the idea for this show of people with their extravagant pets a few years ago when he spied a book on tarantulas in a pet store. For those of you who know Travis’s work well, you’ll likely understand why the image of the book’s author in the back, proudly displaying his blue ribboned tarantula whilst donning a dapper blue tuxedo, inspired an entire exhibit of work. This exuberant-looking author was quite a character!

    Don’t fret, Travis is still depicting Victorian-era portraits; there will be no leisure suits in this show. Perhaps you will see a fly with people eyes or a giant truthsayer toad…but I’m not allowed to confirm any of that.

    Curious Pets will be on view from November 12 – December 10, 2011 with an opening reception on Saturday, November 12, 8-11pm. Travis is extremely excited about this exhibition. If you live in Los Angeles, don’t miss it!

  • “Bewitching” Stranger Factory Annual Halloween Show

    Stranger Factory, the newest gallery from the Circus Posterus Collective, opened a group show last weekend, October 7th, entitled Bewitching. This is the first installment of an invitational annual group art show that takes inspiration from the vintage esthetic of Halloween. Growing up I was always mesmerized with the various decorations that would spring up during Halloween. In recent years the decorations are cheap, lazy looking, and lack any kind of uniqueness, so it’s great to see a show that harkens back to the hand-made, and often “outsider” feel the vintage designs had. The show features work by Andrew Bell, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Doktor A, Travis Lampe, Leecifer, Travis Louie, Jon MacNair, Irene Mendonis, Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Rhode Montijo, Chris Ryniak, Scott Tolleson, and many more. The show runs until November 12th, and if you aren’t able to make the show in person all of the work is now online to view. Love those paintings by Emily Trovillion (shown last).

  • “Uncle Six Eyes” sculpture by Travis Louie

    “Uncle Six Eyes” sculpture by Travis Louie

    About 2 years at the San Diego Comic Con, a sculpture by Bigshot Toyworks was presented, “Uncle Six Eyes” by Travis Louie. The sculpture was a full figure, identical to what was created in the original painting. Now Shinbone Creative (formerly Bigshot) has just released the “Uncle Six Eyes” resin sculpture, although now it is a bust. Measuring at 10″ x 7.5″ x 7″, this resin sculpture is limited to 150 pieces at $120 each. I like the idea that they changed it into a bust, and the color really makes this looks as though it has a nice aged patina to it.

  • Garbage Pail Kids @ Gallery 1988

    On September 2nd, Gallery 1988 in Melrose opened a new themed group show, this one with work inspired by the Garbage Pail Kids. I remember when the collectors cards first came out in 1985, and kids went insane for them. The biggest draw for me was the art, and it’s the one thing that made the concept of this show exciting. There is a huge amount of work available in a variety of mediums, as well as limited edition prints. It was great to see what each of these artists would bring to show; would they make a painting styled like the classic cards, or opt to make something new and unique in design. There is a good mixture of both, and I am happy to see works styled like the cards and some that are not. It helps to break up what could have become too much. There is some amazing work in this show, seen below are some paintings by Allison Reimold, Dave MacDowell, N.C. Winters, and some killer prints available from Rhys Cooper.   • Travis Louie on Sketch Theatre

    Sketch Theatre has just added a new video to the site, this one is from Travis Louie. This is the artists 6th video on the site, and also comes out right after his birthday. When you watch the video you will notice the song is a birthday tune. The final sketch is entitled “Stan the Green Man”, and really shows the skills and elegance Travis has with graphite.   • Review: The Blab! Show @ Roq La Rue Gallery

    On August 12th Roq La Rue in Seattle, WA opened the latest Blab! Show group invitational, with a specific theme of the Krampus as inspiration. For those not familiar with the Krampus, he is a pre-christian demon like creature that accompanied St Nick during Christmas and punished the bad children. The exhibition features work by Ryan Heshka, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Erik Mark Sandberg, Yoko d’Holbachie, Travis Louie, Travis Lampe, Martin Wittfooth, Ana Bagayan, Owen Smith, Chris Buzelli, Shag, Brian Despain, Mark Garro, Marc Burkhardt, Laurie Hogin, Andy Kehoe, Derek Nobbs, Alex Kuno, Andrew S. Arconi, Julianna Swaney, Jason Holley, and Fred Stonehouse. The folks over at Loved To Death, made their way from San Francisco to Seattle to check out the show.   • New prints by Tara McPherson and Travis Louie for Safewalls

    Safewalls has just released a couple of new prints, one from Tara McPherson and the other from Travis Louie. The prints are inspired byZarkanaâ„¢, and Tara McPherson focused specifically on Mandragora, one of the female characters . Both prints are 20″ x 30″ with an image area of 19″ x 28″. signed and numbered in editions of 300. There is also deluxe versions of each print available as well.

  • Cotton Candy Machine & Tiny Trifecta

    Tara McPherson’s new art boutique the “Cotton Candy Machine” is now online. What you will find there is prints, shirts, posters, books, stickers, skins for you phone or laptop, and even pillows. Another great feature of this new boutique is art shows, the first of which is entitled “Tiny Trifecta” and opens this coming April 9th. The show will feature smaller art all priced at $100, so first come first served. There will be no presale so you need to be at this show in person. Art from Esao Andrews, Audrey Kawasaki, Arabella Proffer (shown), Scott C, Sas Christian, Shawn Barber (shown), Natalia Fabia, Lola, Travis Louie, Joshua Petker (shown), and many more will be showing miniature works at the show.
