Christopher Ulrich “Halloween Studio Sale II” @ La Luz De Jesus Gallery
If you happen to be close to La luz de Jesus Gallery this Sunday, October 31st, you might want to check out Christopher Ulrich’s “Halloween Studio II”. Starting at 11am and going until 7pm, to give you some time to get ready for any Halloween parties, you can check out a huge amount of studies and finished paintings by the artist. Not only is this a great way to see the working process of Ulrich, via the many studies and sketches, but it’s kind of like a one day show featuring work from his “Illuminator” and “Demoneater” Series, “The Fourth Enochian Key”, “Pan’s Labyrinth” concept work, and paintings from various group shows he was in. Looking at all of this art is sure to get you even more excited for his upcoming solo show at La Luz de Jesus this December 7th, “The Reckoning”. As an art historian, the work of Ulrich is very exciting. So much of his work is filled with iconography, classic references, and it doesn’t hurt that his skill is Make sure you take a look at the sale online if you can’t make it in person, there are some really good deals such as “The first patron to buy two of the available Demoneater Doors will get one more for free, and will get their portrait painted into the centeral quattrain panel of the The Reckoning.” How cool is that?

13th Hour @ Last Rites Gallery
The most recent incarnation of the 13th Hour group show at the Last Rites Gallery opened this past Friday, October 29th. I am told by a few of the artist that attended the reception, that all went well, and it was one of the best show yet. The full show is now online to view, and seeing how today is Halloween you might want to head on over and check out some of the art. There is some really amazing work in this show, once again Scott G Brooks creates a mind-blowing painting, and I love how Sarah Joncas created something creepy in a Hitchcock kind of way.

“Omnipresent, the King of Change” print by Chris Sheridan
Flatcolor Gallery has just released a new print by Chris Sheridan. The painting “Omnipresent, the King of Change” was first seen at a three person show at Flatcolor back in January. The print is 11″ x 17″ with a print area of 7.25″ x 13″ on Hahnemuhle Museum Etching 350gsm 100% rag Fine Art Paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 50.

“Gage and Church: The Undead” by Michael Shapcott
I’m always happy to see new work by Michael Shapcott, but honestly never thought he would make something so creepy. “Gage and Church: The Undead” was made for the Totally Terror group art show that took place at the Madison Art Cinemas in Madison, CT. Pet Semetary was one of those movies that freaked me out, simply for the character of Gage, and Michael has captured that weird little kid so well in this painting. You can almost here him saying “No fair, no fair”.

“Phantasmagoria” @ Yves Laroche
There have been so many great shows and prints being released, this group exhibition at Yves Laroche almost slipped right past me. “Phantasmagoria” opened just a few days ago, October 27th, and features new work by Travis Louie, Brandt Peters, Kathie Olivas, and Chet Zar. The different styles of each artist in the show fits quite well with each other. I do have to say that I am most impressed with what Travis Louie and Chet Zar created such as “Zombi”, “Evil Eye”, and “Jack Newbury, Prince of the Patch” (all shown). “The Hart of Valhalla” busts by Godmachine
A few weeks ago Godmachine released an etching entitled “Before You Were Young” (featured), which is still available. I was wondering how he would follow up such a great print, but it never occurred to me it would be something 3-dimensional. “The Hart of Valhalla” (Eikthyrni ) are 16 ceramic stag heads that he hand painted, so that each one is unique. The heads are around 4″ high and come with a presentation box and free sticker.

Artist Profiles: Bryan Drury
Bryan Drury is an artist working of New York, and is a graduate of the New York Academy of Art. He currently has a solo show, “Antibiosis”, on view at the Dean Project Gallery. The work in the show, as stated by Bryan, “are allegories whose subject matter comes out of the conflicting dynamic between human society and our mutable conception of nature.” Bryan is a phenomenal painter; looking at his CV you can see that he has quite a lot of education and it shows. This is type of work that you need to see in person or else you miss out on all the detail, and magic that oil painting done in the right hands holds.
