Joe Havasy

Joe Havasy is a painter who lives in Athens,GA. He started painting in
2002 and hasn’t stopped since. In December of 2004 he graduated from
the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Around
that time, he started doing a bi-weekly cartoon in the Athens’s free
paper the Flagpole, and has since collected these cartoons in 5 zines
entitled “Misanthropic Cavalcade.” A new collection should be popping
up sometime this fall…

He has been featured in quite a few group shows, most occurring at the
Alcove Gallery in Decatur, GA. He continually has solo shows in Athens
also. In 2006 a friend introduced him to the site etsy.com which
allows crafters to peddle their wares. Since getting hooked up with
etsy, Joe has sold art all over the world and it has been his most
valuable tool for self-promotion.

Most of his work is influenced by a childhood spent reading books
about animals and comics. He was primarily interested in drawing and
even wanted to be a comic book penciler in high school. When he got to
college he decided to be a fine arts major and be a “real gallery
artist,” however, very quickly his old cartoony ways resurfaced and
combined with the classical education he was getting at the University
of Georgia. He describes his work as cute-sturbing, a blend of
adorableness and morbidity. He now lives in a small apartment with a
little dog and tries really hard to create new artwork each and every
day.

One of my all-time favorite artists. I own 7 original pieces of his and can’t wait to see what he comes up with next! He does an incredible job of catching subtlety in facial expressions, and I think that makes art come alive for me.
