New work by Erik Jones

Erik Jones (featured), an artist I have not shown on the site in quite a long time, has come out with a bunch of new work. He also recently had a solo show, “Pop Op” at Redletter 1 this past June 3rd. The work has yet to show up online in entirety, however he has released some images on his various profiles. Erik’s traditional works, no less exciting than anything digital he creates, is made of a myriad of materials such as watercolors, colored pencils, water based oils, nu-pastels, and acrylics on Rives BFK paper. If there was ever a paper that could be called exquisite it’s Rives BFK. James Jean uses it a lot, and Erik Jones used it for these new works that, as you can see, are exquisite in themselves. I love the blend of figurative imagery, abstract shapes, and textures that each piece holds. Makes sure to keep an eye on his website, Deviantart Profile and blog for more work and updates. Here is what Erik said about this new series of works:

This new “thing” that I’m doing is really just about experimenting.
Though the figures tend to be “attractive”, the new direction places less emphasis on sexuality. I simply start out with a loose line drawing of a figure and experiment with building up and breaking down color and shapes in and around said figure. It is not only a salubrious experimentation with the figure but also an exploration of mediums. This process is more sporadic and embraces imperfection, rather then focusing mainly on rendering “perfect” realistic skin.
…It’s also a lot of fun.

“Small Stuff 3″ cash and carry exhibition @ Bear and Bird Gallery

The “Small Stuff 3″ show opened at the Bear and Bird Boutique and Gallery last November 22nd, the show will run up until January 9, 2010. The feature of this show is that all of the work is cash and carry, so you buy it and then walk out with it. If your buying the work online it immediately gets shipped to you. Great idea and perfect for those still shopping for gifts, or happily being a Scrooge and just buying stuff for yourself. The show features work by Ana Galvan, Danielle Estefan, Danny Brito, Dékal, Erik Jones, Naoto Hattori, Phil Noto, Shannon Bonatakis, Skot Olsen, Bill Carman and many more. The majority of the art is small, so you won’t find too many outrageous prices save for the Naoto Hattori. He commonly makes smaller works and the detail levels are skill is well worth the price. Here are a few examples of what can be had. For the full show chck out the gallery’s site.

It looks like there will be originals as well as apparel available in the shop, but for now there is 35 prints to choose from. The prints vary in size and are all just $30. Erik Jones prints and originals at Uberbot

If you head on over to Uberbot, the collected works of Erik Jones is there for not only your viewing pleasure, but also available for purchase. This show looks to be the last one at Uberbot for a while, as he is getting ready to move to New York.

There is a great amount of work, all in a variety of mediums. There are some acrylic works, and some mixed media pieces were he uses water color, colored pencil, acrylic and oils. I think he has a great style, and love the fact that you get a slightly different feel with his work depending on which medium he is using.

Erik Jones’ redesigned website launched

Erik Jones has just relaunched his website with a new design. The new layout still holds the same basic idea as his older layout, but is much easier to move around in, and has some very cool additions to it.

The information areas of the site (about, news, contact, etc) are now in an easy to access tabbed area. Links to his other profiles are placed right in the footer so you don’t need to go hunting for them. His gallery still has the same horizontal layout, but this time the gallery is in flash. I am usually opposed to flash, but there are exceptions and this is one of them. The images are large and quite easy to see. It also doesn’t hurt that the loading/progress bar is a sketch by Erik, so it’s pretty cool to see the sketch being “drawn” while you wait.

Hover over the images and you can click the info tab which will give you all you need to know about the piece, a shop (open soon) to buy a print of the work and a detail option. The detail part is very cool, you can basically get a super close view of the works, and you can click and drag the work around to see it all. Best thing next to really being in front of the work.

“Boy of Hell” by Erik Jones

The “Let Them Eat Pancakes : The Hellboy Art Show!” has been up at the Uberbot site for the past week now. I wrote about a print that Stuntkid has in the show in my last weeks article for SFWeekly. Well I thought I would feature one of the original works of the show, and my favorite one has to be “Boy of Hell” by Erik Jones. He has an amazing style of painting and never ceases to amaze me, weather it’s paintings of beautiful women or portraits like this one that just seem to punch you right in the face.

This painting is made from house paint and markers, and from the looks of the site, it’s already framed up for you. head on over to the site to check out the show, and Erik’s painting.
