New SFWeekly article, and updates

I have a new SFWeekly print article up, you can find it by going to the SFWeekly links on the right there.

I also fixed the Creep Machine, so that it looks the same in Internet Explorer as it does in Firefox. I had no idea it looked so bad, I don’t use IE. Sorry to all my IE readers, I hope this makes the experience more enjoyable.

aotd: “Vanity”

vanity_johnkolbeck.jpg
Been a while since I had an art of the day entry, and this is a great one to get the ball rolling again. This piece is from an artist out of Pennsylvania, John Kolbek.

He’s an amazing painter, and this specific piece by the art of Michael Hussar and the music of Parsons. You can really see the Hussar influence in this one, especially in the eyes. That crazy slippery look that Hussar has is even here.

The rest of his gallery is filled with amazing work, different than piece, but I’m sure you’ll love all of it.

Sketch Theatre is online

I saw this site off of youtube a while back, but it wasn’t fully online yet, it is now.

Skecth Theatre is a site filled with videos of artists, sketching really. It’s a great way to see your favorite artists at work, and see how they do all the things you have been wondering.

So far there is a pretty good amount of artists: Michael Hussar, Chet Zar, Alvin Lee, Black Frog, Corey Miller (L.A.InK), Daphne Yap, Dave Hill, David Krentz & Mari Inukai and many more to come.

The videos are amazing, head on over and take a look.

IMSCAR3D, Greg “Craola” Simkins @ Gallery 1988

Well the latest show from Craola is now up for your viewing pleasure on the Gallery 1988 L.A. website.

The show looks like it was amazing, and every single piece sold, in something like 40 minutes. There were some really big pieces there as well. I really wish this show was closer, but I know he’ll show in the bay area soon.

Check em out: Craola at Gallery 1988

“Private Empire” @ Asterisk Gallery

Arabella Proffer’s “Private Empire: The National Portrait Gallery of Kessa” opens at Asterisk Gallery October 12th, 2007 – November 2nd, 2007

Opening Reception: Friday, October 12th from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Asterisk Gallery 2393 Professor Ave. Cleveland, Ohio. 44113

Proffer has created a fictional National Portrait Gallery, whose works are a juxtaposition of modernity with aristocratic tradition. Her subjects sport twenty-first century punk and gothic styles as part of their formalwear, but without the mohawks and piercings, each portrait resembles typical late Renaissance and Stuart portraits. Proffer notes: “this series centers around balance of counter-culture and tradition; how punk or gothic styles might be adopted by aristocrats and socialites for serious portraits left as a reminder of their legacy. What was once considered rebellious has now become widely accepted. Traditionally, each portrait preserves what may later be a historical moment. In the case of this series however, the “historical” moments are of my own imagination”

As complements to the portraits, Proffer has created genealogies, short biographies, country maps as well as a site-specific installation. Themes of decadence, beauty, and entitlement play throughout the series.

Joshua Petker, Apres Garde

Well this last Saturday I went to San Francisco and checked out a few shows. It was great as I haven’t gone to a show in a while. The first one I saw was the very last day of the Eric Joyner show at the Shooting Gallery. Man this guy can paint. I love his work now. It always helps to see paintings in person, there is always so much that is lost when you see the work only in print or on the web.

The next show was Joshua Petker’s show at the Shooting Galleries new location, Gallery Three. His paintings are always so colorful. We talked a lot about art, art schools and so on. He has a show again in March at the Shooting Gallery.

The last show as the “Apres Garde” show at the Gallery 1988. All the work was great. I got to see some of my favorite artists work in person, Keith Weesner, Andrew Foster and Attaboy. I talked to Katie who worked there, and she even got surprised when she heard I was the Creep Machine guy. Feels great to know that people dig what I’m doing.

There are pics in the gallery area of these shows.
