aotd: “Pete Doherty”

Pete_Doherty_by_julip.jpg
I’m no big fan of Pete Doherty, but this piece is way to cool not to post. It captures his likeness very well, and adds some striking elements to the mix. This is a companion piece to this Kate Moss one here, although I like the Doherty one a little better, maybe its just the contrast of the image really.

The wavy neck, and distorted face set upon those huge shoulders look great. And I love that red nose, it really helps to make that face pop, with the sunken eyes and suture across the forehead that nose was needed.

It was really hard picking a piece from this artist to show, she (E. Hollinger) has such a great style. I ended up with this piece, mainly for the great caricature. Please make sure that you look at the rest of her gallery.

Get some art & help an artist out

We all the saying “when it rains it pours”, I myself have seen this happen and it’s quite nasty to go through.

Mike Jungbluth is going through a rough time right now, you can see exactly what on the link below, and he has decided to do some commissioned artwork to raise some money. This way, you can get some cool artwork and help out Mike as well.

Here is a list of his prices and examples: Rates
and here is the original post of what is going on: “Biggest Crap Storm Ever”

Weekly article on SFWeekly

If you’ve noticed on the right sidebar, I have links to articles that I have been writing for the past few weeks. I didn’t want to post this news right away, as I didn’t know if I would be writing these for too long. But, I have been doing these articles now for around 7 weeks.

The column is every week, usually on Tuesday morning, and it’s goal is to show the Top 5 best prints to buy. Prints that have just come out, limited edition prints, and prints that may have been looked over. I can’t grab all the good ones though, Audrey Kawasaki’s last set of prints sold out in minutes, so I had no time to post those. I do try to get some “must buy” prints, as well as vinyl collectible figures.

The main reason I write this weekly column, is the same reason I manage this page really, I love art. I love reading about, looking at, and helping out the artists as well. If one of my columns can sell some prints for people, then I have done good work. Make sure to take a look at the past columns, and maybe bookmark to catch the new ones. Also if you have prints for sale, feel free to submit them to me.

Ben Templesmith original work

wormwood_bt_cw.jpg
If your a fan of Wormwood, Ben Templesmith has some original work for sale. It’s an ink and watercolor piece on 8×12 paper. It looks amazing. I really love his digital work, but when he does pieces like this, I like them even better.

There is also an original oil painting of Wormwood done by Colton Worley. It was commissioned by Ben, from what I have read. It’s a huge 3′x4′ piece. It looks amazing, I would love to see some close-up shots of it. I’m gonna try to get some shots of it. The seller, has no feedback as of yet, but Ben the seller is Colton Worley and if Ben trusts him, so do I.

aotd: “The City”

The_City_by_paperboogie.jpg
Been a bit since I have posted anything. It’s been a very busy week for me, so hopefully this piece will make it all better.

This piece is from an artist out of Los Angeles named Allison Torneros, its Acrylic, colored pencil, and paint marker. And here’s what she has to say about it:
“This is a self portrait of myself, dedicated to my late brother, Romeo, who was killed in a car accident at the age of 21 when I was 14. When I was young, around 9 years old, and my brother would come home from hanging out with his friends, curious me would ask “where were you?! Where did you go?” He would joke and say “Somewhere over the rainbow.” I really thought he was serious, and he even promised he would take me there sometime. As a kid I always imagined what that place ‘over the rainbow’ would look like, and I couldn’t wait until the day I could finally see it formyself. This painting is a representation of that place that resides in me..”

Very killer piece, it has so much to look at and I love the line work of the face juxtaposed with the background. make sure you look at the rest of her amazing gallery.

New Crazy 4 Cult print for sale.

The next Crazy4Cult print is now available for sale. The last one was the Greg Simkins piece “Ed’s Losing”, it was very killer indeed and is now sold out. As promised another print from the Crazy4Cult show is now for sale.

This time you actually get “5″ prints, 5 signed and numbered 4 3/4 x 4 3/4″ prints. The pieces are from Scott Campbell’s set entitled “Showdowns”. These little prints are very cool, 5 little showdowns: Rocky vs. Drago, Ghostbuster vs. Slimer, Han & Chewy vs. StormTroopers, Indiana Jones vs. Some dude from Temple of Doom & Charlton Heston vs. Planet of Apes. I really love how minimal they are, that and they look like the kind of art that would fit some underground zine/comic.

The whole set is limited to only 35, each set is $60. Get em while they last.

aotd: “Portrait at the bar vs 1″

portrait_at_the_bar_vs1_by_Neizen.jpg
This piece is from an artist known as Neizen. I know very little about this artist, but I do know he likes the movie “Ricky-O the story of Ricky”, anyone who likes that movie is ok in my book.

This specific piece is made from Charcoal, ink and some photoshop. It looks amazing, I’ve always loved the look that lines of ink can add to either waterolor or charcoal pieces. I’m not quite sure where photoshop was used, maybe a little of the background texture. It flows seamlessly, it’s great when you can’t tell where photoshop has been used.

The expression looks great too, not like this person was posing but more like the artists caught the person in mid thought, or mid conversation. I love it when we can see a portrait of someone who doesn’t look like they were posing on purpose.

Check out this artists amazing gallary, so many great works there.

“Green Grass”, by Garduno, Haubs & Jackson

greengrass.jpg
I wanted to start collecting zines, underground comics and so on to start reviewing. Also, to create a good little collection for myself. I’ve always collected comics, but honestly current comics kind of suck. So why not get a hold of all the independent comics & zines put out by artists?

This specific zine is created by Travis Jackson, Tom Haubs & Ken Garduno. It’s around 5.5″ x 7″ and it has roughly 30 b&w drawings on the inside. The cover is nice and sturdy, sturdy enough that it survived the punishment of being shipped. It’s also signed on the inside cover, letting you know what # you have. I think the styles of the three artists fit very well, you can tell page after page that this zine flows quite well. It succeeds in making me really want to own some original art by these artists.

Tara McPherson original, THESSALY

thessaly.jpg
This may be the first original of Tara’s work that I have seen on sale here, it’s even framed. I don’t really like the frame, I like my frames to be plain so that it doesn’t distract from the painting.

It looks amazing. I love the colors, very vivid. I haven’t seen this image before, it’s from a comic called: “Sandman Presents: Thessaly Witch for Hire #2 of 4″

Head on over and take a look.

Shawn Barber prints, on the cheap.

While it’s nice to have a high quality, signed giclee print of Shawn Barbers work, they sell out very quickly. Some of the prints are also only available at shows. So if you have no worries about having a non-collectible, affordable, poster print of his work, there are some available now.

At first I thought this place was selling these poster prints without permission, but I have learned otherwise. These prints are not on nice giclee paper, but rather poster paper. These are cheap, and mainly just a cheap way to score some killer art. So pick one of these bad boys up, and enjoy not having to worry about how well to treat these prints. It will also be quite cheap to frame them. There is quite a few various prints of Shawns work right now, and more on the way.
