aotd: “DJ SBON Cover”

djsbon72.jpg
I have stated this many times before, but I really love the look of watercolor, well not all watercolor works. I do however like what Drew Falchetta does with watercolor and inks.

He has a great sketchy style, and fans of Gris Grimly, and even Scott Campbell will like his work. You can see the Ralph Steadman influence when he gets all crazy with the inks in his work. I do like however that he seems to draw just a little on each of his influences, as opposed to directly biting their style.

If you like what you see here, head on over to his homepage and check out the rest of his work.

Shows opening December 15th

This Friday some great shows are opening.

Lesley Reppeteaux has a solo show called “MOONSTRUCK with WANDERLUST”, at the same time Gris Grimly will have his solo show “A Prairie Nightmare” at the MModern Gallery

“The Big Tiny” opens at the Red Ink Studios in San Francisco. A group show that focuses on “miniaturization to extreme amplification”. 25 artists will be a part of this very cool sounding show.

At the White Walls Gallery in SF as well, “All Star Hustlaz” opens, featuring work by: AJ Fosik, Ben Horton, Katy Horan, Dalek, Damon Soule, Henry Lewis, Sylvia Ji and many others. This is one I’ll make sure to check out.

Elizabeth McGrath has her solo show “The Incurable Disorder” at Billy Shire Fine Arts in Culver City, CA.

And the one I wish I could see, “Three Kings” at the Light Gallery in Costa Mesa. The three artists shown will be David Lozeau, Ken Ruzic and Bigtoe. All three have great styles.

There is an estimated delivery of December 31st. So if you want this one, I would buy now.
Head on over to Birdbath Publishing and e-mail Frankie from the contact page, or just do it here: Frankie @ BirdBath.

aotd: “Pretty Strange, Strange Pretty”

pretty_strange__strange_pretty_by_meluseena.jpg
Today’s piece is from French artist Lisa Falzon, otherwise known as Meluseena. She works both digitally, as well a traditionally. I think her style transfers over quite well.

I really dig the look of the piece, the face being so stylized. It really is a unique looking face. I love portrait work, and when the artist can make the face look like something we have never seen before, it’s even better.

Check out the rest of Lisa’s work here:

Ashley Wood’s “World War Robot” preview

desert_bertie_piantjob.jpgI’ve been watching Ashley’s blog for a while, to find out exactly what this “WWR” project is. Well, they now have a preview image of this very cool collectible.

It will be called “WWR Release 1.0 Rothchild Mechanics P-57 AKA Bertie the Pipebomb”. This robot will hit the stores April 2008. I really dig the paintjob on it, it’s 14 inches tall, and the killer part is that it has 43 points of articulation.

The pic says Desert Bertie paintjob, does this mean that there will be more than one paintjob to choose from, or how cool would it be if it was like the Dunny? Design your own Bertie.

Keep watching this page for info: World War Robot

aotd: “Children Should Grow on Trees”

Children_Should_Grow_On_Trees_by_tubam.jpgEvery once in a while I find an amazing artist, that just seems to have disappeared. No way that I can contact them. It’s especially hard when they use a nickname.

So todays piece is from Matt, or Tabum, whichever one it is. The artwork is amazing. The picture clearly shows the brushwork going on the painting, I really dig the whole color scheme. The expressions on those elephants are great.

Matt’s whole gallery is quite amazing, it’s too bad I have no where else to direct you. So if you want to see more, head over to his profile. If anyone knows where Matt is, let me know.

aotd: “Self Version”

Self_version_by_dominuself.jpg
Today’s piece if from an illustrator out of Romania, Dominus Elf. I was looking for some more info about the Revelations weekend, and stumbled onto this work. The artist says that it was inspired by the work that Andrew Jones does. If you have seen any of Andrew Jones work, you can clearly see the influence.

I love the colors, they really pop out at you, and all the little details and shapes in this one really make this an intense piece. Head on over to the artists site, he has a lot of impressive work and even some tutorials and brushes for the artists out there.

Ahren Hertel Show online, print available

OnGuard.jpgThe solo show of Ahren Hertel at the Gallery 1988 in LA is now online for you to oogle at. The pieces look amazing, it really helps that G1988 has a killer photographer. In some of the photos you can really see the canvas texture, and they are all well lit. I love the imagery that is in each of these pieces, the reoccurring characters, the worms, eggs(?) and of course the big eye, little eye thing he has going on.

There is such a good variety of work, he has oil on canvas, graphite on paper and even some hand sculpted works. They also have a print available based on the drawing “On Guard”. The print is a 10×17″ lithograph, and each one has also had some oil paint added, so you know each print is different. The prints are limited to 25. If you want one, head over to the site and give them a call.
