This past September 2nd at the Wonderland Gallery (started by Kat Von D) Kevin Llewellyn had his latest, long awaited solo exhibition entitled “The Unsaid”. Kevin has an amazing style, and I would often visit his website in hopes that something new would pop up. This new show features 20+ works, a few of them are older pieces, but each one of them is outstanding. This is really one of those shows that I wish I was able to see in person. It’s been almost a month now, and aside from the random photos that have shown up on Flickr, or Twitter, the show has now been put up on the galleries website. The baroque style frames he uses look perfect, and quite a few times the dominant color in the painting finds it way onto the frame itself.
The show features a couple of self portraits by Llewellyn, one showing himself at age 28, and the other a self-portrait “suicide”. Kat Von D, her younger sister Karoline, and Nikki Sixx are also represented here. The Motley Crue bass player is the subject of three paintings, one of which entitled “The Severed Hands of Nikki Sixx” feature a fetal skull, something that pops up in two other paintings “Lust For Life”, and “Black Poinsetta”.
The show has a good mix of some classical styled portrait work, and some erotic themes as well. The nudity is less akin to figure paintings, and seems to be closer to that of fetish and alt photography. In that respect it fits the show seamlessly. Take a look at the preview images, and then make sure you go to the galleries webpage to see the full show. If you happen to be in the area, do not miss seeing this in person.
