Andrew Bell and McBess @ Rotofugi Gallery

Opening tonight, March 25th at the Rotofugi Gallery in Chicago, IL is a duo show with Andrew Bell and McBess. Andew Bell’s new series of works is entitled “Love the End” and not only features the acrylic and graphite works his shows are known for, but also includes some sculptures, a limited plush, print portfolio, and even a limited edition rug. It’s a strong series of works, with the color palette of all the works being red, black, and white. McBess (Matthieu Bessudo), new show is called “Gut Grinder” and features some ink on paper works, a large selection of giclee prints (framed or unframed), and a custom painted vintage guitar. There is some good pics of the gallery with the art hung up, something I wish more galleries would do. It gives the viewer a good idea of the scale of the works.

“Lyric” group show @ 323 East Gallery

323 Gallery recently opened a show curated by Glenn Barr that features art inspired by music. It seems like it has been quite a long time since a show like this has come around, hopefully this show and the “INLE” show curated by Craola will signal a new trend towards art and books, instead of movies and pop-culture mashups. Not that I don’t like those kinds of shows, but it would be nice for some more variety. “Lyric” opened on March 19th and will run until April 19th. Glenn Barr has assembled a greta list of artists such as: Jeff Soto, William Wray, Bask, Chris Recarrdi, Rick Morris, Gary Taxali, Chet Zar, Brandt Peters, Kathie Olivas, Yumiko Kayukawa, Camilla D’Errico, Brandi Milne, Lisa Petrucci, and more. After the preview images head on over and check out he full show.

“Lined in Lead: Works in Graphite” @ Gallery Nucleus

The past week or so hasn’t been filled with the most positive news, but hopefully things will be changing soon for everyone. The art shows however just keep coming, and are always a good way to try and brighten your day up and remind you that there are people out there trying to create beautiful things. The latest group show at Gallery Nucleus is a perfect example of this. Entitled “Lined in Lead: Works in Graphite”, this exhibition focuses art created with nothing more than graphite and paper. A few of the artists used toned paper for a more dynamic look, but overall the entirety of the show is one amazing drawing after another. Work by Wesley Burt, Alexandre Day, Andrew Hem, David Jien, Rodrigo Luff, Joao Ruas, Barron Storey, Rob Sato, Shelly Wan, Allen Williams, and Michael Zulli will be on view until April 11th.

Stella Im Hultberg – “Fragmented” @ London Miles Gallery

On March 12th, Stella Im Hultberg’s latest solo show “Fragmented” (previewed), opened alongside Scott Belcastro’s new series of works “I Dare the Sky” at the London Miles Gallery. Stella’s new work looks amazing. It;s a good mix of her tea-stained paper drawings, acrylic and colored pencil works, and one painting that she used oils with even though she has moved over to water based media. The new style of hair she is drawing really looks fantastic. Even though Stella has less work in this show than Scott Belcastro does, I found myself spending more time looking at her work, it just feels like a stronger series. Check the show out for yourself over at the galleries homepage.

James Jean – “Rebus” @ Martha Otero Gallery

James Jean’s first Los Angeles solo show “Rebus” opened this past weekend on March 12th at the Martha Otero Gallery in West Hollywood. The show features new paintings, sculptures, limited edition scarves, drawings, and sketchbook layouts. If your a fan of James’ work you have no doubt been following the stream of teaser images that have been popping up on various sites while this show drew closer. I often wish I was able to visit every show that caught my eye, but this has to be one of the shows I am truly going to regret not seeing in person. I cannot rave enough about how exciting his work has become in the past few years. The scale, color palettes, and the brushwork of these paintings just keep getting better and better. Giant Robot and Brandon Shigeta have photos from the reception, which really help to see the scale of some of the works.

Ken Keirns “Alone With Ghosts” @ Gallery 1988

The past weekend some really great shows opened up, with Craola’s “INLE” group exhibition opening at Gallery 1988, and Ken Keirns latest solo show at the Venice gallery. This latest show from Keirns is entitled “Alone with Ghosts” and features 14 new oil paintings. Ken has such an amazing style, the figures in his work are becoming more intense. Compared to his early works, these latest paintings have this “smokey” or Sfumato look to them. Make sure to check out the full show.

“The Pillars of the Earth: A Tribute to the Masters” @ Distinction Art

If there is one theme a group show can have that will consistently reel me in, it’s a show in which the artists are drawing inspiration from earlier periods of art. The last how like this was “The Idol Hours” that took place last November at London Miles (featured). Distinction Art is all set up to open another show with this theme entitled ” The Pillars of the Earth: A Tribute to the Masters” on march 12th, and will continue until April 2nd. There is some great work in this show, and I am glad that a majority of these artists tackled paintings that aren’t often reinterpreted. The list of participating artists is Sean Chappell, Jeff Christensen, Nathaniel Clark, Jon Jaylo, Jason John, Dan Lydersen, Macsorro, Pedro Matos, Joey Remmers, Ivan Unwin, Timothy Vermeulen, Beau White, and Pamela Wilson. Take a look at the preview, and then keep your eye on the site for the full preview.
