Wondercon SF 2009

The Wondercon in San Francisco opened this Friday at the Moscone Center. It goes until Sunday, so if your like me an missed the opening on Friday there is still two more days. I am a fan of comic books, but I enjoy the artists alley a lot better. It’s a great chance to score some prints and originals from some really amazing artists. I will hopefully have some good pics of the event when I get back, but I wanted to give a rundown of who I know will be there.

Alex Pardee with at the Zerofriends booth #1374. He will be signing, and the good news is that there is 25 of the Watchmen prints (shown) available. He saved some after the NY Con for his SF buddies.

David Mack will be at table #134, he is right next to Jim Lee so you can check out his work as well. David will have some books and limited editions.

Ben Walker will be in the small press area, booth #SP18. He will have copies of his new book, t-shirts and some affordable mini paintings for like $10. He will also have Michael Slack with him at the booth.

Camilla D’Errico has two tables, and some new plushes to show off in the artists alley at #085

Mike Mignola can be found in the artists alley at table #101

Jonathan Wayshak/Scrapbook Manifesto can be found in the artists alley at booth #121

I’m sure there is way more that I have not found yet. There are some signings if that is your thing. Erin Grey, Adam West, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Richard Kiel and the one one I will get is from Tony Todd (Candyman, Night of the Living Dead).

“The Ambush” print by Jeremy Fish

Fecal Face Dot Gallery just had an opening that featured a mural installation, and limited edition over-sized print release. The print is now available online if you weren’t able to make it to the show. The print is 22″ x 34″, signed and numbered in an edition of only 30. This is an excellent looking print, and the size is definitely a plus.

“Straight No Chaser” print by Dave Kinsey

Dave Kinsey has a new print available. Entitled “Straight No Chaser”, it is a 4-color screenprint on 100% cotton rag paper, 18″ x 24″ signed, numbered and stamped in an edition of 125. I love all of Dave’s work, but this has to be one of the most energetic and exciting prints I have seen for a while. Thanks to omgposters.com for reminding me of this print.

The print is available here: BLK/MRKT Editions

“Birth of Unreckoning” print by Edwin Ushiro

A Paper Tiger has just released a new print, this one by Edwin Ushiro. The print is entitled “Birth of Unreckoning” and is 12″ x 12″ on textured paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 25. The image has some really cool textural effects to it, I would have loved to see the original one in person.

J.R. Goldberg launches Etsy shop

I wrote about the art of J.R. Goldberg for one of my SFWeekly.com articles back in December. To recap, Goldberg is an artist out of Los Angeles. The first time I saw her work was in the Jellyfist book and ever since then I have been a fan. The book is written by Jhonen Vasquez (Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, etc) and all the art is by Jenny. She has an amazing style, so the idea that she now has a shop were fans can creepily stalk on a daily basis is excellent indeed.

The shop has some original works, a mini-comic and the print set I first wrote about. The “Momento Mori” print set includes 9, 5.5×3.5 inch hand-printed cards all in a limited set of 200. Since these prints are handmade, there is a slight variation with each one. Look after the jump for more images of the set.

Glenn Arthur new work and process

Californian artist Glenn Arthur has just added some new work to his blog. This new painting “Objects In The Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear” 16″ x20″ acrylic on wood, is a part of his new series entitled “The Ghost And The Banshee”. I also like the fact that he added some process shots of al the stages of the painting. I love when artists do this, as it not only can show you some tricks if your an aspiring artists, but it allows you to see the craftsmanship of the painting we all enjoy.

Looking at the process shots, you can also clearly see that Glenn rocks with acyclic paints as well as graphite.

The Lowbrow Art Sale: Feb 24th

This weeks article features prints by Mars-1, Nouar, Kelly Thompson, Camilla D’Errico & Drew Millward. Check it out Here

Art of the day: “Untitled” by Michael Shapcott

Michael is one of the artists that will be in the upcoming show the Creep Machine is curating, “This is the End” at the Alternative Cafe in Monterey, CA. The show opens on March 6th, but I wanted to feature some art from the artists that will be in the show over the next couple of weeks.

This is a new one from Michael, it’s very big at 48″ x 72″ and is acrylic, graphite and oil. I love the colors that he has been using in his latest works, and the skill in his drawings. That ram looks perfect. The piece is for sale as well, and I believe you can just get in touch with Michael via myspace.

Kelly Thompson prints 15% off

New Zealand artist Kelly Thompson is having a sale on prints up until Feb 25th. Wish I got to this one a little earlier, but there is still some time to save 15% on the prints in her online print shop. All of her prints are on fine German etching paper, and it looks like all of them are limited to only 10.

I love the mixture of rendered faces and the flat, graphic elements that she adds to each one. Head on over and see all the prints she has, and make sure you check out the rest of Kelly’s work while your at.
