The art of Marie Sena
Marie Sena earned her Master’s Degree in Medical Illustration from UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas back in 2007, while attending school she was an apprentice at a tattoo shop. She now lives and works in New Mexico, creating fine art as well as working at Stay Gold Tattoo, in Albuquerque. Marie’s training in medical illustration, added with her training in tattoo art, shows in the line-work, color, and detail each one of her paintings is filled with. The type of training she has had is one of those things you don’t hear often, but when you do it makes perfect sense, as they compliment each other very well. Take a look at the preview images and then check out her site for more.
“The Pillars of the Earth: A Tribute to the Masters” @ Distinction Art
If there is one theme a group show can have that will consistently reel me in, it’s a show in which the artists are drawing inspiration from earlier periods of art. The last how like this was “The Idol Hours” that took place last November at London Miles (featured). Distinction Art is all set up to open another show with this theme entitled ” The Pillars of the Earth: A Tribute to the Masters” on march 12th, and will continue until April 2nd. There is some great work in this show, and I am glad that a majority of these artists tackled paintings that aren’t often reinterpreted. The list of participating artists is Sean Chappell, Jeff Christensen, Nathaniel Clark, Jon Jaylo, Jason John, Dan Lydersen, Macsorro, Pedro Matos, Joey Remmers, Ivan Unwin, Timothy Vermeulen, Beau White, and Pamela Wilson. Take a look at the preview, and then keep your eye on the site for the full preview.
“Ides of March” by Scott Holloway @ Secret Society Gallery
Scott Holloway opened his latest solo show at the Secret Society Gallery this past March 4th. There doesn’t seem to be a website for the gallery, however Scott did add the paintings for this show to his blog. This “new work is a continuation and expansion upon concepts found in his previous major series, the contemplative and reductive: Holy Relics, Adam, and Sacred Heart.” One of the paintings is inspired from the theme of the “Three Graces”, once painted by Bottecelli as well as Raphael. Scott takes a different approach with his, showing just the arms, formed in a way to protect the apple of abundance. The show features four new paintings, shown below, but make sure to check out Scott’s site for more news and print releases.

Along with Godmachine a few posts back, Mr Christopher is having a studio cleaning sale. Time to make room for new supplies and work, and in the process give fans an opportunity to score some work for a great price. There is a good amount of paintings, prints, and painted spray cans as well on his Etsy shop, so head on over and take a look.
The compositions of Jim Kazanjian
It’s been far too long since I have posted any sort of photography; it’s always on my mind but I just never seem to get around to it. So, I have some amazing photographs to share from Jim Kazanjian, an artist working out of Portland, Oregon, although he doesn’t actually take the photographs. What you are seeing are new images created from Jim using appropriated photographs, much like the photos are ingredients ready to be mixed up into something new. When I first saw these images I was reminded of Jerry Uelsmann, who will take the photographs and then create new images int the darkroom alone by combining photographs. Jim’s work however has a more decayed, destructive, and unnerving feel to them. When I first saw the image below, wondering what the hell happened to that house crossed my mind before thinking about any sort of digital trickery. In a way, it’s like each one of these structures are presented like portraits.

The Art of Jael Segura
Originally from the Caribbean, Jael Segura was brought to the United States in 2002 and now is a fine art student, and freelance illustrator. Her works are created in a variety of mediums, such as colored pencils, digital painting, and even screen-printing. I like that she has a strong style, one that stays consistent with all of the work that she does. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next. Check out her portfolio for the rest of her work, and make sure to check her blog and other social network sites, to keep with any news.
“Girls with Stars in Their Hair” Print set by Gene Guynn
Almost a year ago in June, Gene Guynn created a series of graphite and watercolor works entitled “Girls with Stars In Their Hair” (featured). There were 10 paintings in this series, but he slimmed it down to 4 for this set, which must have been a hard choice. The prints are 5″ x 7″ with a 4″ x 6″ image area on Somerset Velvet, 100% cotton rag paper. Signed and numbered in an edition of 200, and a signed certificate of authenticity. The best art is, this set is under $20.

Oil studies by James Zar
Chet Zar has just added some new oil studies to his online shop, however these new 8″ x 10″ oil on wood paintings were created by his father James Zar instead. A very talented painter as well, James has a unique style and uses color palettes that really give these portraits a dynamic feel to them.
