Review: “Primal Renderings” by Sandra Yagi @ Modern Eden

On November 12th at the Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, a solo exhibition by Sandra Yagi opened entitled Primal Renderings. The show featured oil paintings from a few series of works the artist has been working on. Mythology and Religion, Anatomical Paintings, and Skeletal inspired works. One of the main elements of this show that really interested me was the anatomical works, I have always been a fan of anatomy in art, and it’s always impressive to see an accurately rendered musculatory or skeletal system.

Preview: I See You See x Dan Harding and Joanne Augustine @ Articulated Gallery

Opening this Saturday, December 3rd, at the Articulated Gallery in San Francisco is a duo show with Dan Harding and Joanne Augustine entitled I See You See. The show is an exploration of inspiration, as Joanne’s photographs were taken by Dan and used as the basis for a new series of paintings. I have always been interested in the way that artists find inspiration, what draws them to create and what pushes them ever forward, and the idea that one artist was influenced by what another artist was influenced by is an amazing idea. The reception starts at 8 PM and will run until 11 PM, both artists have also flown out to San Francisco to be in person. This is a great opportunity to see some beautiful photography and painting in one place. Take a look at the preview images below, and then be there or wait it to show up online.

Megz Majewski, Jasmine Worth, Jason Hernandez, and Young Chun @ Cave Gallery

Opening, tonight, Friday November 11th, is a 4 person show featuring work by Megz Majewski, Jasmine Worth, Jason Hernandez, and Young Chun at the Cave Gallery. while the show does not have a set theme, looking at the work there is a “dark surreal” tone to it, and the four artists fit well with each other. I am always happy to see new work by Jason Hernandez, and love the fact that he is showing ink and painted works. This is the first time I have seen the work of Young Chun, and while I would like to see a bit more variety in the layout of the works, I do like the way the artist handles the paint. I am also open to the idea that this is a series of works which rely on the similar layout of each piece, so I am going to keep my eye on this artist to see what comes next. The show runs until December 3rd, so if your in the area make sure to stop by.

Preview: “Curious Pets” x Travis Louie @ Merry Karnoswky Gallery

Opening Saturday, November 12th at the Merry Karnoswky Gallery in Los Angeles is the latest solo show from Travis Louie entitled “Curious Pets”. These new works focus on not only the characters in the paintings, but their unusual pets as well. As always each painting comes with a story, and you can see a few of these over at Travis’ blog such as the hilarious story of Oscar and the Truth Toad(Ted) (shown first). We have seen Travis paint animal-influenced portraits before, but the idea of people and their pets is a new direction. Just by looking at the few preview images he posted on his blog, this show is going to be something you don’t want to miss.

Review: “Spirit Board” Group Show @ Articulated Gallery

On November 5th the Articulated Gallery in San Francisco opened the Spirit Board group show, curated by JL Schnabel. The show features a wide variety of artists all taking inspiration from the Ouija Board. Back in 20o8 Copro Gallery hosted Chet Zar’s “Taking Board” show and like many shows in Southern California, I wasn’t able to see the show in person. However, I do feel that the Ouija Board itself merits a few shows dedicated to it, so I was very happy to hear that Articulated would be hosting this show. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make the reception night; I heard that many artists were in attendance and it was quite a night. I did stop by he next day so I could see the show, and took some photos and made another video walkthrough.

Dave MacDowell & Augie Pagan @ Flatcolor Gallery

On November 3rd, Flatcolor Gallery in Seattle opened a duo show entitled MacDowell & Pagan’s Lowbrow Candy Store with new works by Dave MacDowell and Augie Pagan. This show is exactly as it’s titled, a caricature laden, pop-culture jabbing, color-filled lowbrow art fest by two brilliant artists. Dave brings more of his mash-up style paintings, with a new “Lebowski” themed piece, as well as another amazing Jack Nicholson portrait. Augie Pagan’s work focuses on individual characters, or a few at most. His colors aren’t as candy-themed as Dave’s work is, but it fits the content perfectly, and his style of caricature is very impressive. Just look at the Machete portrait seen below. The show will be on view until November 27th.

The 13th Hour 4th Annual Group Show @ Last Rites

Just a few days before Halloween, on October 28th, Last Rites Gallery in New York opened the 4th annual group show The 13th Hour. The gallery is known for consistently showing the best in dark and surreal art, and the 13th Hour is a show that focuses on dark surrealist works from a broad variety of artists. This year the list of participating artists included: Shawn Barber, Matthew Bone, Paul Booth, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Jason D’aquino, Tom Gabriel Fischer, HR Giger, Fred Harper, Naoto Hattori, Michael Hussar, Joka, Sarah Joncas, Aunia Kahn, Michael Mararian, Chris Mars, Annie Owens, Chris Peters, Anthony Pontius, Dan Quintana, David Stoupakis, and many more.
Aside from the outstanding dark art shows the gallery opens month after month, I love the shows that feature dark works of art from artists that rarely contribute to these types of shows, and art from those you might not have expected, such as Self Deceased XXXII by Tom Gabriel Fisher — otherwise known as Tom Warrior of Celtic Frost fame and most recently Triptykon. Eli Livingston also created a sculpture, one that seems to be able to light up from the inside. leslie Ditto also created some prints from her painting Witching Hour, that might still be available from her Facebook page. If your in the area make sure to stop by and see these works in person, you have until November 27th. Otherwise the show is now online to view.

Reviews: “Semiprecious” by Sam Wolfe Connelly @ Spoke Art

On October 8th, Spoke Art in San Francisco opened the first solo show of New York artist Sam Wolfe Connelly. Having recently graduated with a degree in illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design, it’s amazing that Sam already has a solo show, and a very strong one at that. He has previously shown work with Gallery Nucleus and Bold Hype, but this was his opportunity to show a series of works that will not only show his considerable talent, but the consistency, and cohesiveness. I stopped by the reception night, took a look at the works, snapped some photos, and was able to talk to Sam for a bit about his working process.

Preview: Chloe Earley & Ryan McLennan @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Opening tonight, October 20th, at the Joshua Liner Gallery in New York is a duo show from two outstanding artists: Chloe Earley with Feathers and Wax and Ryan McLennan with his show Abominations. In Chloe Earley’s show she is focused on the idea of flight, with the figures in the work caught in a state of suspension, they are not falling or rising. I like the idea that while the figures are suspended in motion, the brush-work and energetic splashes of color that mark Chloe’s style give a sense of movement to the paintings. Each piece is dripping with color, well balanced, and gives your eye the impression that any moment the painting will start moving and break the tension. In McLennan’s show the works will deal with “universal questions, such as speculating on the existence of God and what it means to be moral.” The shows run until November 19th, so if you can’t make the reception you have some time.
