Review: Shawn Barber “Youth of Today” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

Now that I live in San Francisco, the idea is to go to as many shows as possible and continue writing reviews, and filming new videos for the shows that are most inspiring. I don’t often get to see the shows on the reception night, but I do manage to see them before they are taken down. Shawn Barber’s latest solo show, “Youth of Today” at Fecal Face Dot Gallery is a good example, as I saw this show during the last week it was up. Shawn is no longer located in San Francisco, and this is his latest solo show in SF since he moved to Los Angeles. This new exhibition featured 4 large scale painting that ran in a series, and 7 smaller paintings on the opposite wall. The work in this show continues Shawn’s “Doll Series”, which are all inspired by his concern of a world becoming more enthralled with pop culture. Madeline Von Foerster & Benjamin A. Vierling @ Roq La Rue

I’ve been a little busy the past few weeks, I imagine many have noticed due to the infrequency of posts, and I missed some really good shows to post. For instance a duo show with Madeline Von Foerster & Benjamin A. Vierling that opened at Roq La Rue on July 8th and closes this August 6th. The two artists, referred to as “neo-medievalists”, both use classcial techniques in their paintings. Both artists use the Mische Technique, a style of painting found by the Dutch masters of the 15th century that helps to produce these intense paintings with more depth, color, and transparency than other methods can achieve. I would love to see these in person. I lie the fact that along with paintings, Madeline Von Foerster also had a couple of drawings on exhibit. Another thing that struck me, being the art history geek that I am, is that both artists we inspired by classical works of art and themes. I really like the Medusa painting by Vierling, and the “Odalisque” style painting from Foester; both shown below. The show is open for a few more days so if your in the area make sure to stop by.

Preview: David Stoupakis & Tom Bagshaw @ Corey Helford Gallery

Opening this Saturday, August 6th at the Corey Helford Gallery is two solo shows; “Walking Within These Shadows” by David Stoupakis and “Beautiful Imperfections” by Tom Bagshaw. This is going to be an outstanding show. Tom Bagshaw states in the release “In my first show, I had focused purely on Japanese Yokai. I wanted to continue with that exploration of folklore, ghosts and mythology, but on a much broader scale.” With these new works Tom creates a new body of work that borders between dark and playful, and continues to show that no matter what the medium a skilled artist with an intense imagination can create mind-blowing works of art. If your in the area make sure to stop by the show, it will be up until August 27th.

Michael Ryan & Bradly Platz – “The Order” @ Modern Eden

Opening this Saturday, July 16th at the Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco is a new duo show from Michael Ryan (featured) and Bradly Platz. The show is entitled “The Order” and is not the first time these two artists have shown together. Eclectix Gallery in El Cerrito was responsible for previously showing the work of these two talented artists. I was lucky enough to have Michael Ryan show a painting in the “This is the End” exhibition that took place at the Alternative Cafe, and I am happy to see some new work from him. He is an outstanding painter, and the work really deserves to be seen in person. The reception is from 7-10pm and the show runs until August 13th, so make sure you stop by if you can. For all the Creep fans that can’t make the show, we will have a video walk through of it along with photos and a review this coming week.

Crazy 4 Cult 5

The 5th installment of the Crazy 4 Cult group show opened this past weekend, Friday July 8th, at the Gallery 1988 in Melrose. The show features work from a huge list of artists all inspired by cult movies. Not only were there original works of art on display, but some prints as well. In the past the Crazy 4 Cult series has put out some amazing art, and had quite a lot of art dedicated to just one movie, such as Big Lebowski and Willy Wonka. It’s nice to see each artists work that was created from the inspiration these movies foster, but at the same time there are so many good movies that have been left out of each one of these group shows. I was however happy to see some more horror movies featured such as the pieces by Jason D’Aquino, Chris Sanchez with the ‘Necronomicon’ pages, Justin White with his trio Kurt Russell works, and Scott Campbell with some more “Great Showdowns”. There is no doubt some great work in this show, N.C. Winters “Scott Pilgrim” inspired work being my favorite so far, but I think the show has lost a bit of its punch. There are so many shows now that are being dedicated to one movie, director or actor. I know that many artists today draw their main sources of inspiration from pop culture, movies being the main one, I just think I am in the mood for some more shows with a bit deeper, thoughtful meaning behind them. Let the pop culture references be a pleasant surprise in these shows, and not just the main attraction. After seeing that Jonathan Darby show at White Walls (reviewed), it really reminded me that art can be powerful, educational, and even life changing. Anyway, take a look at the preview images here and then over to the gallery to see the rest of the works.
