Nathan Spoor, Shadow Banquet show

November 2, 2007

NS_Homecoming.jpgIf your in the Phoenix, AZ area you might want to head on over to the Perihelion Arts gallery and check out the opening of Nathan Spoor’s solo show, The Shadow Banquet.

The show is already online for your viewing, and buying pleasure. There are some really cool pieces in there, I love the one called “Homecoming” (shown). It looks like a squid to me, and I like squids.

I like the change in seeing such dark works, nice black backgrounds. It looks quite striking really.

Paper Pushers @ Gallery 1988 tonight

October 30, 2007

Alberto1.jpgTonight at the Gallery 1988 in SF, the Paper Pushers show opens. It’s a huge show featuring all works that are on paper, so you will see not only drawings, but paintings as well.

The list of artists is huge. Gallery 1988 seriously puts on some great shows, between Paper Pushers, I am 8 Bit, Crazy 4 Cult and the upcoming Bitters and Sweets, I’ll be writing about their shows a lot.

I tried to make it to the show, but my car did not allow me to. Looks like it’s time to trade that ol hooptie in for another. So, like me a preview of the show may be the best.

So watch the Gallery 1988 page for more. And take a look at the preview page:

“Private Empire” @ Asterisk Gallery

October 10, 2007

Arabella Proffer’s “Private Empire: The National Portrait Gallery of Kessa” opens at Asterisk Gallery October 12th, 2007 – November 2nd, 2007

Opening Reception: Friday, October 12th from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Asterisk Gallery 2393 Professor Ave. Cleveland, Ohio. 44113

Proffer has created a fictional National Portrait Gallery, whose works are a juxtaposition of modernity with aristocratic tradition. Her subjects sport twenty-first century punk and gothic styles as part of their formalwear, but without the mohawks and piercings, each portrait resembles typical late Renaissance and Stuart portraits. Proffer notes: “this series centers around balance of counter-culture and tradition; how punk or gothic styles might be adopted by aristocrats and socialites for serious portraits left as a reminder of their legacy. What was once considered rebellious has now become widely accepted. Traditionally, each portrait preserves what may later be a historical moment. In the case of this series however, the “historical” moments are of my own imagination”

As complements to the portraits, Proffer has created genealogies, short biographies, country maps as well as a site-specific installation. Themes of decadence, beauty, and entitlement play throughout the series.
