Morgan Slade “Company Killers” @ Shooting Gallery

This past Saturday, January 8th, the Shooting Gallery opened the latest solo show of Morgan Slade. Entitled “Company Killers”, this new body of work brings more of Slade’s mixed media depictions of women adorned with a variety of masks. Football and storm-trooper helmets, as well as mascot and Halloween style masks. The face of the model is rarely seen, so the identity of these women is not the focus. Could this be any woman? Or is the idea here that the model is not the focus, regardless of how much the she draws the viewers eye in? The one thing that I did enjoy about these works is the textures, and the marks that some of the works held. I would almost rather see a few paintings made by Slade with the model completely removed. The show is on view until February 5th, so make sure to stop by and check out the show. In the meantime, hit the more link to see more images from this show.

Photos: Genevive Zacconi – “Dysphoria @ Last Rites Gallery

Genevive Zacconi’s solo show “Dysphoria” opened at the Last Rites Gallery on December 10th, and will be up until January 13th if you havent seen it yet. We were able to get some photos, courtesy of Steve Prue, of the opening night, and a little writeup from artist Buddy Nestor.

Genevive Zacconi is best known for her masterful work with oils. Her images fuse equal parts pain and exquisite beauty, from a female perspective. The evident shock and fervor from her previous work is subdued in her latest show “Dysphoria” at Last Rites Gallery, NY.
Genevive’s new works show the hand of a maturing style, both in tone and paint handling. In this collection, the darkest parts of the message have become more subtle yet more powerful. She uses the beauty she can conjure from a distance to lure the viewer in to expose the true meaning of each work. With a candy coated agony, she leads the viewer through women’s struggles with beauty and the psychotically intense ride that humans go through to find love and hold onto it with dagger like claws until it rips apart.
This collection is her most impressive to date and should be viewed up close. The show closes on January 13th, 2011. Get out there and take in the madness. — Buddy Nestor

Glen E Friedman @ Shepard Fairey @ 941 Geary Gallery

During the past weekend I was able to stop by the 941 Geary Gallery and check out the latest exhibition, photography by Glen E Friedman and collaborative works by Shepard Fairey. Tara McPherson & Xioqing Ding @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

This past Saturday, October 23rd, the highly anticipated solo show from Tara McPherson opened at the Jonathan Levine Gallery. The show entitled “Bunny in the Moon” and is filled with work inspired from mythology found from cultures around the world. This is quite a large amount of work created for this show, not only oil paintings but drawings, and even some fabric flowers. Right next door in second part of the gallery was “At the End of the Rainbow” by Xioqing Ding, this is her debut exhibition in New York. She has a very classical style to her work, and you can even see some references to classical paintings and allegories, such as the three graces and Venus. Both shows are now up on the galleries site, and are a must see.

EGo and Creeps show @ Flatcolor Gallery

A little late on this one, but there is still some time to catch these shows at Flatcolor Gallery in Seattle. EGO’s latest solo show “Eventually, You run out of tomorrows…”, and the Creeps group show featuring work by Larkin, Augie Pagan, Parksid, Chris Sheridan, Brian White, and Derek Noble. This is the perfect show to check out this October, and should be seen simply because the art is that amazing. Last year EGO had a solo show at the gallery and created some beautiful pieces, this show is a great followup.

Review: Horrorwood @ WWA Gallery

Featured just under a week ago, the Horrorwood group show at the WWA Gallery opened up. Apricot Mantle had some work in the show, and once again I was able to have him review the show and share some photos of the reception.

Nothing beats Halloween…Unless it’s a Halloween spirit embodying art show called HORRORWOOD! The WWA Gallery in Los Angeles really put on a good show this month with 55 artists from all over the place giving their artistic takes on classic Hollywood horror. The Blob, The Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Birds, Dracula, Rosemary’s Baby, and Metropolis were some of the choices made by the artists in the show. The variety of styles and techniques was wonderful and inspiring to anyone to walk into the place.

Review: Alternative Press Expo 2010

Ryan De La Hoz and Double Punch Gallery

Once again, October comes and so with it the Alternative Press Expo. Besides the idea of Halloween approaching, the APE is the other event I always look forward to during this season. Rows and rows of tables filled with independent comics, zines, shirts, and most importantly (to me at least) original art and prints. The APE is a great place to score some art and prints, and you might also learn about some new artists. Along with all of the new artists hoping to get their work seen, there are some familiar names such as Josh Ellingson, Alex Pardee, Camilla d’Errico, Mats!?, Karen Hsiao, Danni Shinya Luo, Joy Ang, and many more.

Scott Rohlfs “Under the Influence” @ Distinction Art

On October 9th, the Distinction Art Gallery in Escondido, CA opened the latest solo show of Scott Rohlfs. Entitled “Under the Influence”, the show features more than twenty new paintings by the Portland based artist. Scott primarily uses acrylic on canvas, and is able to get a highly rendered skin ton out of the paints. The faces themselves look a bit like some of the rendered faces of Sas Christian, but i’m sure any type of highly rendered face that isn’t picture perfect would do this. In a few of the works the proportions look a bit odd, necks being too small, or legs looking as if they don’t quite connect well. I would love to see the paintings in person and see if this is the same. I really love what Scott does with the backgrounds in each of these paintings. Head on over and take a look at the full show.

Kevin Llewellyn’s “The Unsaid” @ Wonderland Gallery

This past September 2nd at the Wonderland Gallery (started by Kat Von D) Kevin Llewellyn had his latest, long awaited solo exhibition entitled “The Unsaid”. Kevin has an amazing style, and I would often visit his website in hopes that something new would pop up. This new show features 20+ works, a few of them are older pieces, but each one of them is outstanding. This is really one of those shows that I wish I was able to see in person. It’s been almost a month now, and aside from the random photos that have shown up on Flickr, or Twitter, the show has now been put up on the galleries website. The baroque style frames he uses look perfect, and quite a few times the dominant color in the painting finds it way onto the frame itself.

Mike Shine “Flotsam’s Wonder World” @ 941 Geary

This past weekend, Mike Shine’s highly anticipated solo show “Flotsam’s Wonder World” opened at the new 941 Geary gallery in San Francisco. The reception opened at 7pm, and for whatever reason I decided to take my time getting there and successfully missed the live music and performance that was put on. By the time missus creep and myself made it to the gallery, around 8:30pm, the gallery was already packed. I should have known better and made sure we got there quicker.

The gallery space is very large, so I was curious as to how the artist would use the space. I did hear a bit of how there would be some big installation pieces in the show, but I had no idea it would be like this. What Shine did was actually create another world that opened up once you walked in the gallery. A carnival full of color, nostalgia, and mythology was there before your eyes. It was a lot to take in, with the amount of people there along with the staggering amount of artwork to be seen.

Review: Get the Lead Out II @ Swoon Gallery

This past August 28th, the Swoon Gallery opened the Get the Lead out II group show. Apricot Mantle was able to head to the show for us, snap some photos and give the Creep Machine another review.

A whirlwind of creativity exploding with graphite onto paper. Get the Lead Out II was a one night only pop-up show at Ronin Gallery featuring artist sketches, pen & ink drawings, watercolors and finished paintings presented by Swoon Gallery. This show was fast, furious, fun and full of precious small to medium artworks to be enjoyed only for one night. It was one of those magical rare shows that gave the viewers a chance to see some rare drawings and sketches coming from some of their favorite painters while also showcasing some artists who use graphite as their primary medium.

Christopher Ulrich “Illuminator: The Royal Wedding” @ La Luz de Jesus

Just this past Friday, August 6th at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery, an amazing show featuring new works by Christoper Ulrich opened up. Entitled “Illuminator: The Royal Wedding”, this solo exhibition, “Each piece in the series is designed to be its own portable temple marked and charged by the number 8″. The show features 16 paintings, 16 illustrated studies, 1 additional drawing, hidden notes, and 16 print editions. The prints are of the original 16 illustrated works and are each limited to a series of 12. Not only are the drawings expertly rendered showing Ulrich’s skills with graphite, but the oil paintings are even more impressive. Every inch of these works is filled with beautiful contrast, intense colors, and a perfect blend of inspiration from contemporary and classical works. I also liked the fact that each painting has its own custom made frame. Ornate frames chosen to fit with the paintings are great, but when the frame is designed specifically for the work or series of works, its just one more detail an artist can add to a show to really make a difference. It would be great to see these works in person, but for many the web will have to do. Make sure you check out the site, read the intro and digest every painting in this show.
