Books: Pre-order “White: A Decade” by Michael Hussar

Back in 2010 at the Alternative Press Expo (reviewed), I talked about a new book in the works from Baby Tattoo for artist Michael Hussar. The book, entitled White: A Decade is now finally ready for pre-order and from the preview images, looks amazing. If the news around the net...

The art of 非

And artist working out of Tokyo, 非 works primarily with computer software to create these amazing digital paintings. In a way the art reminds me a bit of YDK Morimoe (featured), but perhaps they are both a part of the same art groups online and have influenced each other. It really is hard to believe these are digital images, I can imagine these all as large scale oil paintings. Check out the previews here and then over to the artists portfolio for more.

Preview: Dave MacDowell’s “Lowbrow Love Letter” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Opening this Saturday, April 30th is the latest solo exhibition from acrylic mastermind Dave MacDowell. Entitled “Lowbrow Love Letter”, this show will feature 11 works with a few of them inspired directly from contemporary artists such as Chet Zar (shown last), Mark Ryden, Luke Chueh, and even Michael Hussar..? Dave’s unique spin on pop culture and movies will also make an appearance with paintings featuring “The Dude” (Big Lebowski), Charlie Sheen, Antoine Dodson, zombies, and an absolutely freaky looking Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. While Lowbrow art might have tamed down a bit, or what Robert Williams called “chronically cute and politically correct” (source), Dave is still making art that not only looks amazing but continues the tradition of a scene that was once seen as subversive, one look at “Beating The Meat Market” (second) shows that. Take a look at the preview images, and then over to the site for the full show. Dave will be in attendance at the reception, and we will hopefully have a video interview up on the site a few days afterward.

New work by Ana Bagayan for FB69 Gallery

Ana Bagayan will be showing some new drawing at the Art Amsterdam Fair at FB69 Gallery in Germany this coming May 12th. Each of these new drawings are graphite and charcoal on wood paper, with “Chopped” (last) having some oil and acrylic added to the mix, and “Flower Child” (first) with some extra watercolor added. I love how intense the contrast is on each of these, the media is covering the wood paper almost entirely in some of these. Make sure you check out Ana’s site for more news and updates.

Preview: Sarah Joncas & Anthony Pontius @ Last Rites Gallery

Opening this Saturday, April 30th at the Last Rites Gallery in New York is two solo shows, Lilith by Sarah Joncas, and The Decay by Anthony Pontius. Sarah Joncas is using the Lilith myth more as what the character represents, not a direct reference. As stated in the press release “the women I’m portraying in these pieces are bolder, more sexual and more mature than those of my previous work, I’ve decidedly brought back some of the whimsy that I’d abandoned after years of schooling.” Anthony Pontius is using a mixed approach to painting to create new myths, “a story that is familiar yet it has not been cultivated by anyone.”
Creep Machine was able to get some exclusive preview images, so hit the “read more” link to check out the full preview. The gallery is also taking pre-orders, so if you are interested in any of the works make sure to contact them directly. Otherwise, keep your eyes on the Last Rites homepage and if you can attend the show it will be up until June 5th.

The Art of Stuart Whitton

An artist working out the UK, Stuart Whitton has been creating art from an early age. His primary material is graphite, and all of the works you see on his site no matter how sculptural they look, are all hand drawn. I first saw Stuart’s work on booooooom after checking out the daily feeds on the new Artwire website, which is the main reason I created that site, a new way for me to learn about art and not have to scour the net for it. As stated on Stuarts homepage, his influences are in “the process of image construction, form, and surreal ambiguity with a preference towards detailed tonal qualities true to the realistic.” Looking at his work, it’s almost hard to believe that these are simply graphite drawings. The idea that he even drew strips of paper, and folds that you believe are changing the surface quality of the drawings, are in fact just elements to the drawing. After the preview images make sure to check out his homepage. He has multiple images of each work, and has some great close up shots as well.

Interview: Crystal Barbre

It’s been little under a week since Seattle based Crystal Barbre opened her latest solo exhibition at the Whisky Bar in her hometown. The show features some new figurative works, and still life works. I sent some questions to Crystal a bit before the show and now that she has had some time to mellow out after the reception, she sent over what is sure to be the most in-depth interview the site has had. Greg Hanefeld has some excellent photos of the opening that you can view on his Flickr (here), you will also see a couple throughout this interview.

Creep: You attended the Mark Kang O’Higgins atelier at the Gage Academy of Art, which focuses on drawing and painting. Can you tell us a bit about your experience there, and what drew you to the program?

Crystal: I had been interested in attending art school for a couple years. I checked out all the bigger name art institutions and even went and visited a few of them, but they seemed confused about my focus – wanting to learn the ins and outs of classical figurative painting but wanting to apply it to more “lowbrow” conceptual art which they considered illustration. They couldn’t seem to really understand combining the two – fine art and illustration. Then I found Mark’s atelier at the Gage Academy in Seattle. It’s so small I had my doubts at first but I am sure in two years I got one of the best educations I could get anywhere in the country. The atelier focuses hardcore on classical figurative drawing and painting skills while also allowing me to explore my work conceptually. The workload of painting 10 hours a day five or six days a week really is what gave me the ability to take my work to the next level professionally. I will always consider myself indebted to that program.

The Noir Art of Dianne Gall

An artist working out of Australia, Dianne received a Bachelors in Art from The South Australian School of Art in 1985. He work is clearly inspired by Film Noir, and there is an almost creepy narrative quality to each painting. Each painting has this sense that you might have either missed something a few frames back, or something is coming right around the corner. The paintings are not only voyeuristic, but create this other world that we can look into but always feels a safe step back. It could be the cinematic feel, or the monochromatic color scheme. It gives me a nostalgic feel for Hitchcock movies. Take a look at Dianne’s website for more work, and she also has two blogs that she updates with news, and daily paintings. (Here and Here) Youc an also check out a recent exhibiton entitled “Come the Night” that took place at the Emerge Art Space this past March 30th – April 15th.

Prints: “Somewhere” by Craww @ 1xrun

1xrun just put up a new Flavorpill Friday print, this one is by UK artist Craww. “Somewhere” is 13″ x 19″ on archival cotton paper, signed and numbered in a max edition of 50. There less than 20 left as I write this, so I have a good feeling this edition will reach the max number. All prints also come with a certificate of authenticity.
