Review: “Of Melancholy & Monkey Business” – Jackie Gallagher @ Articulated Gallery

On Saturday May 7th, I made my way to the Articulated Gallery on Haight Street in San Francisco to check out a very exciting show. I rarely visit this street anymore, and have never been to this gallery, but it was the reception for the first solo show of Jackie Gallagher, an artist I have been raving about since 2008. I was lucky enough to have a painting of hers in the “This is the End” exhibition and have watched her art become more and more intense throughout the years. This solo exhibition entitled “Of Melancholy and Monkey Business” features 16 paintings by Jacqueline, in one of the most unique galleries I have visited. read the full article for more images, a video and the full review.

Audra of Loved to Death and Jackie Gallagher

The Articulated Gallery is connected to a shop called “Loved To Death“, created by Audra & Brennan Dance. When you first walk into the store you are greeted with taxidermy, momento mori jewelry, art books, and a whole host of art curiosities. It’s one of those shops that you really need to set aside an entire afternoon to peruse. Knowing what kind of art Jackie creates, the Articulated Gallery located in the back of the shop, was the perfect place to have a solo show. The walls of the gallery are painted a nice neutral gray, and allowed the colors of Jackie’s work to do their magic and invade your eyeballs. The gallery space is a medium size, but easily allowed the 16 paintings, large and small, to fit on the walls without looking cluttered at all.

“A Perfect Vacuum” by Jeremy Geddes

Jeremy Geddes has just added a new painting to his blog. Entitled “A Perfect Vaccum”, this painting is roughly 20″ x 35″ oils on board. The painting is part of a loosely connected series, possibly to the previously released painting “The Cafe“? The title is inspired by a book of short stories/essays by Stanislaw Lem, which is one of the books in the painting. There is also a chance this new painting will make its way into a print. Head on over to Jeremy’s blog for some closer shots that even show some brushwork.

New Work by Jason Edmiston

While I was running around this past weekend trying to see all the shows I could, the Toy Toyko Underground Gallery in NYC opened “The Crazy Monsters” art show on May 6th. This group show featured work by Jason Edmiston, Stephen Blickenstaff, Brian Ewing, Gary Pullin, Justin Erickson, Frank Russo, and many more. This is the kind of art that really got me hooked on this contemporary art scene, and I am happy to see that there is still a few artists creating monster works such as these. Jason Edmiston created three acrylic paintings that are out of this world. “Joey”, “Axl”, and “Tommy” are all monster versions of these well known musicians. The colors are so vibrant and intense, I would love to have seen these in person, the whole show honestly. Jason has some photos over on his Flickr site of the reception, and in one of those photos you’ll see John Cebollero. Maybe the two will work on a collaboration painting soon?

Review: “Moleskine Project” – Rod Luff @ Spoke Art

On Thursday May 5th, Australian artist Rod Luff opened his solo exhibition the “MoleSkine Project” at the newly opened Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco, CA, the latest endeavor by Ken Harman, who brought art fans the “Bad Dads” and “Quentin VS Coen” group shows. The new gallery has some great things in store for the next year, and this new show from Rod Luff was a great way to kick it off. I stopped by the gallery to check out the work in person, take some photos and video, and was even able to talk to Rod a bit about his working process and inspirations. We have an exclusive video that will hopefully give fans a better idea of what the show looks like in person. Hit the “read more” link to the video, images, and full review.

Preview: Rod Luff – “Moleskine Project” @ Spoke Art

Spoke Art, the force behind the Bad Dads and Quentin Vs Coen group shows, are opening a San Francisco based gallery this Thursday May 5th. To kick off the very first reception of this new space, Rod Luff, who recently showed at the Phone Booth Gallery, will be showing some new works. The Moleskine Project features framed pages from an entire sketchbook the artist filled with oil paintings, sketches, studies, and more. The gallery also made the great decision of having the works framed in a way so that you can turn it around and still see what was on the other side of the pages, so no work by this exciting artist has been lost. The reception opens @ 5pm and the show will be up until May 28th. I’ll be stopping by to check out the work, take some photos, and even a video. Prepare for a more in depth review soon.

Preview: Jason Snyder, Paul Barnes, Joe Scarano, & Roland Tamayo @ Rivet

Opening this Saturday, May 7th at Rivet Art in Columbus, OH a group show featuring the work of Jason Snyder, Paul Barnes, Joe Scarano, & Roland Tamayo opens. A majority of the work is from Jason Snyder, and I really like the combination of the color palettes and the frames that Jason chose for his works. The show flows very well and is worth a look. Keep your eye on the site for the full show to be posted.
