New works by Apricot Mantle

Apricot Mantle posted two new paintings that are in the Big Tuna/David Lynch Tribute show. Both drawings are pismacolor on illustration board, 16″ x 20″. As always each one has a very unique frame to go along with the theme of the artwork. I love how much each one of his drawings seem to glow, he really knows how to rock those colored pencils.

Cabinet of Curiosities drawing by Ojimbo

Jim Sheely, or otherwise known as Ojimbo, has just posted a new drawing. This 9″ x 9″ ink on bristol drawing is filled with “all kinds of odd shrunken heads, weird skulls, centipedes, thorns, entrails, fuzzy buddies, tentacled creeps, a little clown action and other freakish bits.” What you see here is all just ink, no white out to fix mistakes or anything. I’m a big fan of Jum’s work to begin with, but to see him work in this manner looks just amazing. There are so many little details and what looks like an endless array of faces and hidden creatures.

He has it up for sale here: Ojimbo @ Etsy

“Underworld” series by R.S. Connett

R.S. Connett has been busy painting away on a new series entitled “Underworld”. These new works will be shown with Mark Murphy at the Scribble08 Film Premier in San Diego,
(concurrent with Comic-Con) this July 23-26. Each one of the paintings is acrylic on canvas, ranging from 8″ x 10″ to 24″ x 24″. Each painting is like a small cross section of what you would find in little worlds often unseen or passed on by from the average viewer. Every inch of them is filled with information, creatures that we have seen before are perfectly rendered, and unheard of life is filling in the rest.

RIP Michael Jackson

At age 50 the man known as the King of Pop passed away this June 25th in Los Angeles. It was just hours earlier that Farrah Fawcett passed and Ed Mcmahon the day prior. An 8 year old Creep could be found running around the house with a little sparkly glove on (and matching socks) waiting for MTV to play Thriller again. Not only was the song amazing, but was one of the main reasons I am so hooked on zombies and wanted to be a special effects artist. That whole album was amazing, and pretty much everyone had a copy whether they admit it or not. Even Weird Al’s “Beat It” spoof was great, simply because it came off more like a tribute than many of his other spoofs. The latter part of Michael’s life was riddled with controversy, trials, surgeries and and endless supply of rumors.

But this site is not about all of that, its about art. So here are a few paintings that celebrate the contributions of a musician that was undeniably talented, was the template of many musicians to follow and is still responsible for rhythmless people everywhere to try and moonwalk, but still have fun dancing to songs that will never get old.

Artist of the Day: Laura Bifano

Laura Bifano is an artist out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I went on an art hunting spree and was happy to find her artwork in the first 20 minutes or so. She has an absolutely amazing style, full of color and textures as seen in the first painting “Young Bride”. There are elements that have a similar feel to some of the techniques you can see in works by James Jean, Tran Nguyen and Joao Ruas but of course Lauara has her on unique voice here. I like that he paintings also have humor to them, it’s an emotion that many artists seem to overlook.
I am going to try to find out some more information about this artist, but in the meantime make your way to her blog and take a look at the rest of her artworks.

New work by Alberto Cerriteño

Alberto Cerriteño has added some new work to his blog, a couple of acrylic on wood paintings to be specific. The two paintings are for a face series that he is doing. Looks like it’s off to a great start so far, can’t wait to see the rest. I’ve been a fan of Alberto’s for quite a while now. I love how his style translates from digital to traditional and vice versa.

Artist of the Day: Steven Daily

Steven Daily is an artist out of Hollywood, CA. He has a great style, and has been making some art lately that has really been catching my eye. He also partpicated in the latest “Gag me with a Toon 2″ show, and even has some images from the reception to share on Flickr Here
The first painting, “Porcelain” is acrylic on canvas and was a commission piece. Even though she looks like a certain Disney Character, he was not inspired by that. The second one was a gift and is of “Face Bones” from Metalocalypse. It looks amazing, what a gift!

His personal site seems to be down, but you can still catch him on Myspace Steven Daily Myspace

Art of the Day: “Openlicious” by Benjamin Sea

It was almost a year ago this month that I last featured Benjamin’s art for the ‘art of the day” section. He has been posting some amazing art since then, and participating in all sorts of great art shows. He added this new painting to his Etsy shop a while back and I wanted to share it. The painting is acrylic on wood and is roughly 16″ x 18″. I really love the layout and the colors that he has used in this one. His shop is filled with all sorts of collectibles and painting, make sure you take a look.

Leanne Biank launches new website

Leanne Biank has just launched a new design for her website. It looks great and most importantly is easy to move around in, and the gallery has nice big pictures.
Shown is one of the latest paintings Leanne has done, “If They Could Come Back With Max” from the “Beyond the Page” show that took place @ Gallery 1988. It’s a fantastic painting, oil on wood 27″ x 23″ and looks amazing framed.

Art of the Day: “Dead Vixen” by Jonathan Bergeron

Jonathan Bergeron, also known as Johnny Crap, just added this original work of art to the Gigposters classifieds section. I’m a sucker for beautifully rendered inkwork, and this is a great example of how skilled Jonathan is. It simply looks amazing, the hair and various skulls can keep your eyes busy for ages. The work is ink on bristol and is 9″ x 12″. It can be had for $120.

Art of the Day: “Pele” by Michael Shapcott

Michael Shapcott has been busy in the past few weeks, but he did find some time to make a new painting. “Pele” os 12″ x 16″ graphite and oil on canvas. If you saw the piece that he had in the “This is the End” show entitled “Seaweed”, you might see some of the same feel that he had in that painting but he has taken it to a new level. The colors in this new one, the expression and the eyes are so dynamic. I can only imagine how amazing this painting looks like in person. I really hope he keeps going to make a series of works like this.

This piece is now sold, but check out the rest of Michael’s work:

“Forward” MFA exhibition by Ahren Hertel

Ahren Hertel recently had his MFA Thesis show, entitled “Forward” at the University of Reno. I know he has been working on this show for quite some time, I am excited to finally see all that he has created for this show. The exhibition is now over, but I know that he will be concentrating on gallery shows from here on out. His new style is great and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with. Here is a gallery of all the works he had in the show, plus some shots of the gallery setup.
