New work by Arabella Proffer

Arabella Proffer has added some new paintings to her site, and these new ones are not portraits. I have seen some non portrait work from Arabella before, but nothing like this. Each of these new ‘Flower’ paintings are 16″ x 16″ and look amazing. The idea that these are the first of these surreal landscape works, and what would these new styled paintings look like if she keeps going in this direction is very exciting. Take a look at these three, and head on over to her homepage for all her new art.

“Miseryland” Triptych by Dave MacDowell

April 1st at the Compound Gallery in Portland, the group show “Triptych” opened up. Artists such as Jen Lobo, Martin Ontiveros, J Shea, Keegan Onefoot, and Dave MacDowell all made three piece works in a variety of mediums. Dave MacDowell’s “Miseryland” Triptych is completely nuts. There is so much going on in this painting, and the colors are as intense as we have come to expect from his work, and the way he painted in the panel borders was an amazing idea. By painting the three panels on a single canvas, Dave was able to add that background as well as the crazy Mickey looming above, acting as your host to this insane world. Seeing Dave’s work in person before, I know that while this image does show how bright and intense the work is, being in front of the real thing is a must. If your in the area, make sure to stop by and take a look.

“Game Over” sculpture by Kordian Lewandowski

Saw this floating around some of the art & design sites and had to share. Polish artist Kordian Lewandowski drawn inspiration from Michelangelo’s famous sculpture, La Pieta, and reinterpreted the piece with Mario and the Princess. Entitled “Game Over”, the sculpture was made out of polystyrene foam, first chiseled down with a chainsaw and then refined with more standard tools. Head on over to his website for more images, and to take a look at the other inspiring work he makes.

Art of the Day: “Billy Pilgrim” by Laura Bifano

A while back I Featured the work of Canadian artist, Laura Bifano. She has updated with her blog with some new work, one of which I had to share. “Billy Pilgrim” is based on a character from the popular book “Slaughterhouse Five” by Kurt Vonnegut. This was the book that was instrumental in me subsequently buying every Vonnegut had written. I had an idea in my head how the character would look, and I think Laura pretty much saw the same thing I did. It’s a great image and one that I think would make a great cover, or somehow tied to the book more so that other fans could enjoy it.

New “studies” by Audrey Kawasaki

Audrey Kawasaki has added a couple of new “study” pieces to her blog and I had to share them. She states “so ive been having some fun doing these small ‘studies’. i tried to be more loose with the marks, and i must say, i enjoyed it immensely! no matter the outcome, the process was really refreshing.” The outcome looks amazing. I have always loved more brushy, loose works. When done correctly the art has so much energy and movement to it; and as you can see by these pieces, not only did Audrey fully retain her signature figures, but has placed them in an exciting new environment.

Head over to her blog for the rest of the process pics: Audrey Kawasaki Blog

Art of the Day: “Onawa” by Michael Shapcott

Michael Shapcott is in the process of making a new website, and in the meantime has been making some very exciting paintings. The latest paintings have been smaller than most of his work has, and has this perfect blend of materials and textures. One of the latest paintings is “Onawa”, which is the first of a new series and is 8.5″ x 11″ Graphite, Acrylic, and Oil on Illustration Board. I really like this new direction Michael is going and look forward to more works. “Onawa” is available for sale over at Michael’s Etsy Shop, and he even made a new painting video that shows how “Onawa” was made. Check it out: Painting a Painting with Michael Shapcott No. 5

“Helpmeat” series by Brett Despotovich

Brett Despotovich is an artist out of Canada, and also runs the Toronto Dr. Sketchy’s. Brett recently informed me of a new series of works that he has just finished entitled “Helpmeat”. Each piece is charcoal and conte on mylar, 8.5″ x 11″, and there are 15 in total. With the background as black as it is, and the figures rendered in monotone, it is really helps that the poses are as dynamic as they are. Some figures also have a mix of muscle and bone showing through, it’s a great effect and really adds to the works. You can find all the works in the gallery, and it looks like there is a calendar with the images available as well.

Tribute to Dan O’Bannon, R.I.P.

On Thursday December 17th, screenwriter Dan O’Bannon passed away after a 30 year battle with Crohn’s disease. Dan is known for writing such movies as Alien, Aliens, Dark Star, Lifeforce, Invaders from Mars and my favorite Return of the Living Dead, which he not only wrote but directed. I have watched his movies a hundred times over, and if your like me they were influential in your love of horror as well as zombies. Oh and what young guy can forget the cemetery scene with Trash played by Linnea Quigley? So here is a few works of art inspired by some of the movies Dan gave us. If you know more, please let us know in the comments.

Art of the Day: “Pacino” by Dave MacDowell

I always enjoy any new work that Dave MacDowell posts. He has such a great style; not only with painting skill but ideas as well. He had a painting on view at the “MultiUniversal” show at Art Basel this past December 3rd, that I had to share. Entitled “Pacino” this painting is 18″ x 14″ and acrylic on canvas. The best part is that the painting style is impasto, not something you see with his work. He is usually very controlled with the painting, but this energetic brushy style is amazing. It still retains the beautiful colors he gets in each of his painting, and the way that he represents the figure, there is just all those brushy little marks that really make this painting pop! I really hope we see some more works like this in the future. Click on the image to see a bigger version, necessary to see all that texture.

“Crack Cocaine Superheroes Series ” by Eightpussy

It’s been a long time since I have seen any new work from the artist known as Eightpussy. The last painting was for the “This is the End” show back in March. I know that she has been apprenticing to become a tattoo artist, which is a great idea. I can only imagine what she will be able to do with her insane color palettes. It looks as though she has been working on some art again and even came up with a cool little series, the “Crack Cocaine Superheroes Series”. This is such a great idea, and if your like me and grew up in some pretty rough areas, people who look like this are all too familiar. What I love about her art is that she is able to get the smoothest, most beautiful rendering of people with the material she uses and then do the opposite such as these. The faces in these images look run down and far from glamorous. Can’t wait to see more.

Until then, keep up to date on her profile: Eightpussy @ Myspace

Art of the Day: “Girl” by Karl Lindberg

Over the weekend a friend of mine told me about an artist he has known for a long time that I should check out. He was pretty sure I would like his work, and he was right. The artist, Karl Lindberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden and attended the San Francisco Academy of Art for 3d animation and modeling. A good majority of his work is concept art, but if you look at the image shown here I think you’ll agree that he could do quite well in galleries. He has some more work over at his homepage, so if you like what you see make sure you stop by

Check him out: Karl Lindberg Homepage
