Comic Con ‘07 happenings

July 25, 2007

This years San Diego Comic Con is going to have some great artists present, and some great collectibles to be had. Of course, I mismanaged my money this year and won’t be attending. But what I can do, is put together a great list of things to do, my little way of living vicariously through others. There is a huge amount of stuff to see, so I’ll keep it down to what is relevant to this site.

Ol’Scratch print

July 20, 2007

The original painting was done by Walter o’Neal, based on a sculpture by the Shiflett Brothers.
The painting looked amazing, and a print of it is now available.

The print is 24×14, signed and numbered and limited to only 50 copies. People have been waiting for this one for a while, so I imagine it will go quite fast.

Head on over to the Shiflett Bros site to get it, the resin kit of Ol’Scratch is there too:

aotd: “Little Death”

July 13, 2007

littledeath_hauntedhearts.jpg
This piece is a mixed media painting by an artist(s) from Spain that go(es) by the name Haunted Hearts.
The piece is mixed media, so it a nice variety of materials, looks like some sort of paper all curled up and most likely acrylic paint.

I love the look of this piece, the character is unique and amazing looking. The color scheme is wonderful, a nice burnt sienna/umber background that contrasts and pops the character out even more. Very smooth as well, the little death character looks very well rendered. This is the type of character that would make a great repeating character in a graphic novel, series of painting, or so on. I do hope they make this lil guy again.

Head on over to the artists homepage and profile to see even more work along the same vein:

New Chris Mars website July 1st

June 30, 2007

Chris Mars will launch his new website this Saturday July 1st. Chris Mars is one of favorite artists, and I’m very happy this is happening. I love looking at his work and I’m hoping this new site will also mean some prints will be available…

If you have never seen his work in person, you really should make it a point. His work is wonderful on the net and in books, but when you see it 5 inches away from you, you realize how amazing it really is.

Painting stolen from Compound Gallery

June 25, 2007

At the Compound Gallery in Portland yesterday (6/24/07) the above painting was stolen. If you happen to live in the area, or if you see it pop up anywhere, Ebay, forums or etc, please get a hold of them so that the painting can (hopefully) be recovered.

Of course having anything stolen is a drag, but for artists especially, this is how they make their living. It’s not an mp3, but a one of a kind piece of art. It’s basically food, rent, new shoes and so on being taken away.

Here are the specs: It’s 5″x7″ gouache painting on solid 3/4 inch thick piece of Poplar wood.

Head on over to the Land of Apak to help out.

Site Redesign

June 25, 2007

Sorry for the lack of updates, it was a long weekend and I’m also working on a new version of the site. Nothing too drastic, still the same layout really. The main things that will change is the graphics, i’ve seen the background here used on a few pages. So i’m going to work on graphics that will be unique to this site alone, unless someone steals them…

I also want to try a few features that will be more interactive, something that readers of the zine can get involved with. These ideas will take a bit though.

I’m still going to update news while I work on the new version of the site, but I might miss a day or so. Don’t hold it against me.

“How NOT to display your artwork on the web”

June 6, 2007

This site was posted on the frontpage of Juxtapoz, but honestly it’s too good to have it posted here and all over the place really.

It’s a bunch of (sarcastic) tips to help artists understand the best way to display their work. Just because your an artist doesnt mean your an advertising guru as well. There are a few popular gallery pages that I have gone to, that could really be helped by reading these tips.
There are also a good amount of artists that I would love to share their work, but can’t get to it.

I spend a pretty good amount of time, making sure this site works well, loads fast and is easy to navigate. I the Creep Machine falls into any of those tips, let me know. I’ll fix them.

Here’s the tips:
