Jeff Soto & Dave Cooper @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Just this past weekend, June 26th, Jeff Soto’s latest solo show “Lifecycle” and Dave Cooper’s show “Mangle” opened up at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York. Jeff’s work is now a little bit more detailed and intense this round. His last solo show was “The Inland Empire” at Stolenspace, and while that was a great show the work in “Lifecycle” seems a little bit more jarring, and more richly conveys the fear and environmental issues his work often holds. Much of the icons were are used to seeing in Soto’s paintings are here, but some new ones have entered and others have been re-imagined.

Next door in Gallery II is Dave Cooper’s “Mangle”, featuring “new drawings and paintings of twisted ladies”. The color palette is a darker than his latest works have been, and the feel of Dave’s work is a nice compliment to Soto’s. I would like to see the two shows in person, but I can imagine that the feel the patrons had was pretty intense.

100 Artists See Satan Fundraiser

First seen in 2004, the Grand Central Art Center is reviving the hit exhibition “100 Artists See Satan”, now available in paperback. This years show features 100 of the most talented contemporary artists giving their interpretation of the devil, and as opposed to the first version of the show, this one will be a fundraiser with “All proceeds will benefit future GCAC programs and exhibitions”. The exhibition will run from June 26th to August 15th, so if you are around the Santa Ana area make sure to stop by. Just a few of the artists that will be participating in this show are: Peter Adamyan, Ron English, Robert Williams, Tara McPherson, Jeff McMillan, Ana Bagayan, Scott G Brooks, Luke Chueh, Dalek, Coop, Korin Faught, Mercedes Helnwein, Camille Rose Garcia, Alex Grey, Chris Mars, Scott Musgrove, Mark Ryden, Mike Shine, Christopher Ulrich, Eric White, Laurie Lipton and many more.

A majority of the work is pretty amazing. I’m not the biggest fan of Gary Baseman’s work but I really like the drawing he submitted. Eric White’s painting “Nope”, freaks me right out. There is also a good amount of prints we have seen before, but its nice that these artists submitted work to a good cause. Check out the preview images here, and then head on over and see the full show.

Aotd: “Machine Gun Face” by R.S. Connett

R.S. Connett has just added a new painting to his site entitled “War Machine II”, (or “Machine Gun Face”). This new character will be used for Connett’s new series, “Transmutationists”, but might change a little bit. The idea of this painting is man becoming machine, and even though that is not an entirely new idea, I like the take that Connett has in this piece. I love the contrast of that biomechanical figure in the foreground, and those amazing apocalyptic skies he paints so well. This painting is also available, if you head over to the link you can check it out.

This past June 19th at the Bear & Bird Gallery, a group show curated by artist A. Pants entitled “It’s Not a Doll, It’s an Action Figure” opened up. The show features art and photography inspired by action figures. Just a few of the artists that can be see in this show are Dave MacDowell, A.Pants, Lora Zombie, Charles Howell, Allan Innman, Oscar E. Alonso, and more. Love that painting from Dave MacDowell, I wish that was a real collectible figure.

Aotd: “Sunburn” by Dan Harding

Dan Harding has been cranking out some really amazing paintings lately. I am always happy to see new work. His imagination is limitless, and his style and execution always surprises. I was thinking about this a few nights ago; Rick Baker and Dick Smith were responsible for making me want to pursue a career in special effects, something I never did finish. If Dan Harding had been creating these works way back then, I would have been hooked on painting at a far younger age. The piece shown below is called “Sunburn”, and is 9″ x 12″. I love the pose and expression this character has, and you’ll be seeing this face soon with a new project that I am working on.

In the meantime, head on over to Dan;s homepage and follow him on Facebook to see new work and get alerted about new shows.
