Artists respond to the attack at Charlie Hebdo, French Satirical Magazine

Artists of all styles have been paying tribute to Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical magazine, after an attack by masked gunmen left 12 dead at the Paris office. 4 of the victims were revered cartoonists Stéphane “Charb” Charbonnier (editor and publisher), Jean “Cabu” Cabut, Georges Wolinski, and Bernard “Tignous” Verlhac.

    Gruss vom Krampus 2014

In the past few years I have seen the Krampus gain popularity here in the US. For those not familiar with this story, the Krampus is based in Alpine Folklore and is a companion to Saint Nicholas. While most of the kids in the US grew up with stories of getting a lump of coal and no presents if you had been bad that year, Austrian children would be warned that the Krampus would come and punish them, or even kidnap them if they had been bad. The hairy, horned, hoofed, and long-tongued figure, is perfect for inspiring new works of art. There have been a few books, and even art shows throughout the years with artists creating their own versions of the Krampus. If you would like to learn more, check out Krampus.com

    Scope Miami Beach 2014

Every year around the beginning of December, social media and blogs light up with previews of art that will be on exhibition at either Art Basel, or at the Scope Art Show in Miami, Florida. Along with the images of art, there are always a few articles here and there about why the art world is loathsome and even why this is the worst time to be an artist ever. While these articles touch on a few ideas that I do agree with, I still think great art is being made and even shown at these festivals. Street art is one good example; take a look at Streeartnews.net for some of the best murals created during the event.

Temple of Art at La Luz de Jesus Gallery

Since 2012, Allan Amato has been taking photographs of artists, and asking to reinterpret the portraits in their medium of choice. This collaboration is not only unique because it deals with the way in which the photographer sees his subjects, but how the artists themselves interpret and deal with the portrait of themselves. The artists did not compose the photograph, they are just working from it. It’s a great project and one of those exhibitions that must be seen in person. This exhibition marks the final footage to complete a documentary on the project, and Baby Tattoo will release a book mid-exhibition. As quoted in the press release “Rarely are we given an opportunity to confront our perceptions of reality and self; this exhibition will illuminate the universal tension between the pursuit of our vision and the demands of a critical and implacable world.”

“Immune” by Marco Mazzoni at ThinkSpace Gallery

A long time favorite of the Creep Machine, Marco Mazzoni (previously featured) will open his first solo exhibition entitled “Immune” at Thinkspace Gallery this November 8th, 2014. A graduate of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Marco has solidified himself as a master of dry media (colored pencils) in the past few years. He has an amazing style, and blends floral, animal, and figurative elements in the elegant drawings that grace paper and his moleskine sketchbooks. This new show will feature 20 new works, some of his most dynamic and intense work yet. A quick look at “Phospene” (top) shows the electric energy Marco is able to pull from the medium he uses.
