Just this passed weekend, the Last Rites Gallery in New York opened a dual show with new works from Dan Quintana and Pooch. Both artists have submitted new works for this show, and while Dan Quintana only has five paintings, unless more haven’t been added to the site, they are no less amazing than his work always is. Pooch has more than ten paintings, two of which are on guitars. Check out these preview images, and then over to the website for the full show.
Review: Get the Lead Out II @ Swoon Gallery
This past August 28th, the Swoon Gallery opened the Get the Lead out II group show. Apricot Mantle was able to head to the show for us, snap some photos and give the Creep Machine another review.
A whirlwind of creativity exploding with graphite onto paper. Get the Lead Out II was a one night only pop-up show at Ronin Gallery featuring artist sketches, pen & ink drawings, watercolors and finished paintings presented by Swoon Gallery. This show was fast, furious, fun and full of precious small to medium artworks to be enjoyed only for one night. It was one of those magical rare shows that gave the viewers a chance to see some rare drawings and sketches coming from some of their favorite painters while also showcasing some artists who use graphite as their primary medium.

“Never Forever” by EGO @ Basement Gallery
I can’t believe I missed this one. The always talented artist EGO, opened a solo show entitled “Never Forever” at the Basement Gallery in Boise, Idaho, this past July 24th. The show will come down this September 4th, so if your in the area stop by. The works are online, and look outstanding. “An Unforeseen Homecoming” by Nathan Ota @ La luz de Jesus
This Friday, September 3rd at the La Luz De Jesus Gallery is the latest solo show from Nathan Ota. The reception is from 8-11pm but if you get there an hour earlier, there will be a print release. There are over 20 new paintings, and even some pencil works. Strangeco has also started a pre-order for a new vinyl toy by Ota, entitled “Midnight Crooner” that can be found here: Strangco Pre-order. Eklektikos by Kent Williams @ Evoke Contemporary
Opening this Thursday, September 2nd is the latest solo show by Kent Williams. Entitled “Eklektikos”, this new exhibition will open at Evoke Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The reception is from 6-8pm, so if your around the area make sure to get there early to really check out the paintings. The show features a great blend of large scale works, and some studies with mixed media on paper. The style Williams has in drawing he figure shines through in not only his studies, but the final oil paintings as well. I love the energetic, and slightly messy way that the paint is applied. Tom Bagshaw Print Giveaway
Tom Bagshaw is busy working on remaking the MostlyWanted shop, and in celebration of this he will be giving away three prints. The three prints are O-dokuro, edition of 25, 16×16″, 310gsm cotton rag. “Playboy Redux” @ Rotofugi Gallery
The Play Enterprise and Warhol Museum asked over 20 artist to reinterpret the classic bunny imagery. The show as first shown at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, but has been given a second go round at the Rotofugi Gallery. The participating list of artists is amazing: Jennybird Alcantara, Glenn Barr, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Brian Ewing, Jeremy Fish, Mike Giant, Ken Keirns, Jeremiah Ketner, Frank Kozik, Travis Lampe, Tara McPherson, Lisa Petrucci, Bonni Reid, Isabel Samaras, Andrew Schoultz, Jeremy Tinder, and many more. Many of the paintings look pretty spectacular, and fit the Playboy theme very well. I especially like Glenn Barr’s, Jeremy Fish, Tara McPherson, Keith Weesner, Ken Keirns, and Isabel Samaras all of which are shown below. Preview: The Lowbrow Tarot Project @ La Luz de Jesus
The Lowbrow Tarot Project, guest curated by Aunia Kahn, won’t open until October 1st but the images are on the website now to check out and there is some pretty amazing work to be seen. 23 artists were given the opportunity to recreate the 22 cards (+back card) of the Tarot deck. The list of artists is quite impressive; Chet Zar, Christopher Ulrich, Edith Lebeau, Chris Mars, Carrie Anne Baade, Cate Rangel, Kris Kuksi, Brain Viveros, Molly Crabapple, Heather Watts, Laurie Lipton, David Stoupakis, Scott G Brooks, Daniel Martin Diaz, Danni Shinya Luo, and more. It’s time for another Creep Machine print contest. This time the prints were kindly donated by Doug Gordon; you may remember his prints previously featured here on the site. There are three prints up for grabs, “The Gatekeeper”, “Harvest”, and “Scout’s Honor”. Each print is 12″ x 16″ on Moab Entrada rag paper, signed and numbered in editions of 50. I have the prints right here, and I can tell you they look amazing. So how do you win one? All you have to do is choose one print, and then come up with an alternate title for the print. In two weeks time, September 6th Doug will choose the winning title for each of the prints. One entry per print, so make sure you choose the print you really want to win.

Christopher Ulrich “Illuminator: The Royal Wedding” @ La Luz de Jesus
Just this past Friday, August 6th at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery, an amazing show featuring new works by Christoper Ulrich opened up. Entitled “Illuminator: The Royal Wedding”, this solo exhibition, “Each piece in the series is designed to be its own portable temple marked and charged by the number 8″. The show features 16 paintings, 16 illustrated studies, 1 additional drawing, hidden notes, and 16 print editions. The prints are of the original 16 illustrated works and are each limited to a series of 12. Not only are the drawings expertly rendered showing Ulrich’s skills with graphite, but the oil paintings are even more impressive. Every inch of these works is filled with beautiful contrast, intense colors, and a perfect blend of inspiration from contemporary and classical works. I also liked the fact that each painting has its own custom made frame. Ornate frames chosen to fit with the paintings are great, but when the frame is designed specifically for the work or series of works, its just one more detail an artist can add to a show to really make a difference. It would be great to see these works in person, but for many the web will have to do. Make sure you check out the site, read the intro and digest every painting in this show.

John Park “Reveal” @ Cave Gallery
Opening this Friday, August 13th at the Cave Gallery is “Reveal”, a solo show of new works from John Park. The show features 13 mixed media works, and one limited edition print. John has a very energetic style of painting, and I like that the works focuses on the figure, and his stylized way of portraying the body. One of the works in the show entitled “Leda”, particularly caught my eye. I liked how among the other works, a classic fable such as Leda and the Swan made it into the show. Leda, mother of Helen of Troy, was seduced by Zeus in the guise of a swan.

Circus Posterus Summer Sale
Circus Posterus is having a summer sale this Friday, August 13th. One of a kind items, prints, originals, and some new SDCC releases. The original and low stock sale starts at 12 PST, and the new limited edition print sale starts at 2pm PST. There are some new prints by Chris Ryniak and Travis Louie, and some postcard sets as well. There is a large amount of custom toys by Brandt Peters, Chris Ryniak, Kathie Olivas, and original paintings and drawings. The preview for both sales is up in the site now.
