New work by Stella Im Hultberg

After showing some new in a couple of group exhibitions during the beginning of this new year, Stella Im Hultberg is preparing for a solo show that will take place at the London Miles Gallery. The show will be called “Fragmented” and will show concurrently with Scott Belcastro’s new show “I Dare the Sky”. This is Stella’s first larger body of works in over a year, but judging from the preview images the wait is going to be worth it. Take a look at the preview images, and then mark your calendars for the reception on March 11th.

New Work: “Germs” by Travis Louie

Travis Louie has been working on some new concepts lately, and has posted some of them on his blog. These new characters are “Germs” and so far look amazing, I do hope this is something we see in some upcoming shows. I have always been a big fan of his vintage style portraits, and using inspiration from things such as Germs makes me wonder what he will do next. Follow his blog to keep in the loop of new art and shows.

The Art of Ana Teresa Fernandez

Ana Teresa Fernandez is an artist that got her M.F.A from the San Francisco Art Institute. She was also a professor for the University of San Francisco as well as U.C. Berkeley. Ana has also created work with graphite, ink, and even some sculptures created out of broken glass, resin, and hot glue. I am most impressed with her oil paintings. She has a photorealistic style, and as you can see from the images she has mind-blowing control over the medium. Quite often I see artists try to render water, only for it to end up looking like sheets of warped metal, however Ana and the work of Linnea Strid show what a skilled painter can do when set out to recreate even the most difficult of subjects. Make sure you check out her website for the rest of her very impressive body of work. If you happen to be in the San Francisco area, Ana currently has some work on view at La Galeria de la Raza until April 16th.

The art of Liam Barr

Originally from Scotland, Liam Barr emigrated with his family to New Zealand when he was very young. He now lives and works in Wellington. He works primarily with oils, and states his paintings “reinterpret and imbue the romantic essence of the historical context in a contemporary fashion, offering an altogether alternative view. Looking at his paintings you can see that he has a very tight style, with the figures being distorted to a certain degree. I would love to see these up close. He has an upcoming show soon at the John Leech Gallery, however it looks like all of the work from the show is available to view on his website. Liam also has quite a large amount of limited edition prints available, so check those out while your there.

Valentines Day illustration by Chris B Murray

Valentine’s Day is one of those days you either love or hate, or love the idea of it but it still makes it on your worst days of the year list. Either way, we hope you have a good day, even if its just hanging out with friends or family. Chris B Murray sent over this Valentines Day illustration he created, and while you might not like this holiday, at least you can enjoy some great artwork.

“Whimsical Cloud” by Luke Kopycinski

Luke Kopycinksi (featured) has just finished a new painting that I wanted to share. This pianting is entitled “Whimsical Cloud”, and is oil on canvas if I am guessing the surface correctly. Luke added a couple of process shots to his Facebook page while he completed this painting. It’s great to be able to see how artists build up an image, especially when they are so detailed and intense as the work Luke creates. The second image is the first process show he posted.

The artwork of Pamela Tait

Working out of the North of Scotland, Pamela Tait went to the Grays School of Art, and is married to Erlend Tait who is also an accomplished artist. I first saw Pamela’s work at the “Draw” show that took place at the Shooting Gallery back in 2009 (here). I was immediately hooked on the way that she rendered the figure and the dynamic colors she used, which is consistent throughout all of her work. She is represented by FB69 Gallery, so you can find some originals and prints there, as well as prints directly from the artist. It was hard to pick just a few images for the preview here so make sure you check out her homepage for more.

New work by Dean McDowell

If you are a long time reader of the site, the name Dean McDowell is a familiar one. He had works in not only the “Attack of the B Movie Show“, but the “This is the End” group show as well. He recently got his homepage running again, has been featured on a bunch of art sites around the net, and most importantly has some new work to share. Makes sure you check out Dean’s new homepage, and follow him on the various social networks.

“The Goonies” by Phantom City Creative

Phantom City Creative recently teamed up with Twitch Film and TIFF Bell Lightbox to bring this new poster for a movie everyone is sure to know. This new design group has been putting out some killer posters, such as this trio of print based on Robert Wise movies (here) and now this new one for The Goonies. I could definitely see this poster being used for a collectors edition dvd.

“Yolandi Visser” by JR Goldberg

JR Goldberg created an illustration based on Yolandi Visser from Die Antwoord that I had to share. It’s not often that the artist creates works based on real people, but as she stated on her blog Yolandi is already a living cartoon character. From what I have been reading, this image has also made its way onto the Die Antwoord official Facebook page (here), Congrats JR Goldberg!

The narrative works of Jeff Felker

An artist working out of Sacramento, Ca, Jeff Felker has a degree in English as well as studio art. He works primarily in oils, and was nice enough to share some of the new works he will be exhibiting at an upcoming show at Rothick Art Haus this February 12th, entitled “Behind the Striped Curtain”. This group show focuses on circus themed art, so Jeff’s works “address female empowerment in the misogynistic, objectifying environment of circus sideshows. In circus sideshows women are commodified for sexual entertainment value, but in Jeff’s paintings, the women earn back their self respect. By gazing out and confronting the viewer, the women are able to remain self-empowered, despite the physical oppression of their bodies.” Make sure you check out the artists homepage, as well his Etsy shop where you can also find some prints.

The photorealistic art of Kim Sung Jin

An artist working out of South Korea, Kim Sung Jin graduated from the Hongik University for Fine Art. He works primarily in oils on canvas, and as you can see is a photorealist painter, with a very sensual style. I’ve always enjoyed artists that painted in a photorealistic style, but often the content was not as impressive as the skill level the artist had. This new crop of artists, such as those shown at Thinkspace Galleries “New Realism“, are creating work that is not only technically impressive, but draws you in further with the content. Kim Sung Jin’s art falls perfectly into that description. Every new painting you see while going through the artists gallery bring back that awe of how someone could create an image that looks so real, and he even paints macro-like closeups of the lips and face of the models. After looking at these previews, make sure to check out the artists homepage for a lot more.
