It’s been a year long in the making, and now the James Jean “Hint Mints” series is finally finished. Previous series featured such artists as Glenn Barr, Owen Smith, Gary Baseman and Shag. The mint tins should be ready for purchase soon, but for those that fancy prints instead James has added open editions of these illustrations in the Process Recess online shop. Each one of the prints is 17″ x 21″ on ultrasmooth art paper, signed and embossed for $85 each.

Prints: “Goya” by Luke Chueh pre-order
Corey Helford gallery is releasing a new print from Luke Chueh. “Goya” comes from his last solo show at the gallery, “From Light Cometh Darkness” and is a remix of Francisco Goya’s “Saturn Devours His Son”. While I’m not the biggest fan of Luke’s work, I do enjoy this painting. The print is 12″ x 24″ on Arches infinity paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 50. The print can be bought with or without frame. The great thing about the frame, is that it is the exact one that Luke used for the original.

New work by Luke Kopycinski
Luke Kopycinksi was was not only one of the featured artists on the Creep Machine, but also had a painting in the “This is the End” exhibition. He is a a very talented painter and I have been looking forward to seeing some new work from him. It looks like he has now updated his portfolio with a few new pieces. His paintings are very dynamic, as you can see with the loose brushwork and rich colors. If these paintings look like they’re glowing in just these pictures, imagine how they look in person.

New prints by Chet Zar
A while back I made a post about prints from Chet Zar’s “When World Collide” show at L’imagerie gallery being available at the gallery. Well now these prints are available from his online shop. There are five new prints, each one is 17″ x 22″ signed and numbered in editions of 100 for $135 a pop. These are some of my favorite works from Chet to date, although I am sure his upcoming exhibition at Corpo Gallery will
be even more impressive.

Artist Profiles: Sam Jinks
As opposed to the “Art of the Day” section, the new “Artists Profiles” category will be more of an introduction or a small feature of sorts.
So the first artist for this new area is Australian sculptor, Sam Jinks. His work is amazingly realistic, and at first glance is very reminiscent of Ron Mueck. Without being able to see these works in person and just judging them on pictures alone, it does look as though Sam has been more successful at making the surface areas of the sculptures look more like real skin than others have. I like that on a few of the pieces he has decided to add tattoo work as an element.
One of the sculptures entitled “Doghead”, reminds me a bit of Tom Neely’s wolfhead series. Not like it would ever happen, but I think it would be great if those two artists did a collaboration piece.

Gocco prints by Julie West
Julie West has added a bunch of gocco screenprints to her online shop. If your not familiar with gocco prints, its basically this little machine that allows you to quickly burn a screen, then print onto paper with the screen inserted into the machine. Here is a more elegant description: Print Gocco. Its a really handy machine to make prints especially if you have limited space, and as you can see by the new prints Julie West has added, they look great.

Prints: “Lapin Lapin” by Tessar Lo
Tessar Lo has just added a new print to his online shop. “Lapin Lapin” is 12″ x 15″ signed and numbered in an edition of 20 for $100. I like the writeup that he gives on the site about this painting:
lapin lapin was the first painting i did after my move back to toronto. it started on a night when half of my room still resembled a junk yard. i was tired of cleaning and the move had taken a lot out of me. i had not painted then, for what must have been about three weeks; for someone who paints on almost a nightly basis, i was not very happy. i had to paint and i needed to escape somewhere. picking up a tube of yellow paint, i started to squeeze directly on this 48 x 60″ canvas taunting me. it became a journey into a world that i felt i had lost for so long; making this painting brought back a feeling reminiscent of childhood discovery.
i now paint with the hope that my work touches people in the same way. that they can look into my pictures and experience something viscerally without the inhibitions of “adulthood” or “being normal”.
lapin lapin marked a big turning point in my painting. i hope to share it with you.

Now Online: Kris Lewis @ David B Smith Gallery
I’m a little late on posting this info, but did not want to pass on sharing. The latest solo show of Kris Lewis opened August 22nd at the David B Smith Gallery. This is his largest collection of work, and consists of not only paintings but drawings as well. His artwork has consistently amazed me. Kris is not only an extremely talented oil painter but as you can see in the work shown, he is just as skilled with a pencil. I really wish the gallery was closer so I could see these works in person. No matter how exciting they look in pictures, nothing beats seeing the art right before your eyes.

Review: SF Zine Fest 2009
This past weekend I made my way down to San Francisco to cover the Zine Fest at the County Fair Building for SFWeekly. I had a blast at the Alternative Press Expo last year, and was looking forward to seeing more independent zines as well as some new art. It was a lot smaller than the A.P.E and I was told the turnout was pretty low this year. It only took about 30 minutes for me to quickly check out every booth. Just by canning the work I could see what I wanted to take a closer look at, and get a feel for what the Zine Fest was all about. I have a full rundown of the event over at SFWeekly.com.
Originals: “Icy Bastard” & “Bones” by Dan Harding
Dan Harding has two new paintings for sale over at the Hyaena Gallery. Dan just keeps churning out amazing artwork, the blue is the first piece “Icy Bastard” is intense. Head on over and take a look. The first is “Icy Bastard”, oil on canvas, 11″ x 14″ framed. Next is “Bones”, oil on canvas 8″ x 10″ framed.
Review: El Mac @ Fifty24 SF
During that weekend I checked out the Shawn Barber and Moki exhibitions, I was also able to swing by Fifty24 SF and see the solo show of El Mac. I had seen the work online and being a fan of figurative art I was quite taken with it, as well as interested in how he creates these amazing portraits with spraypaint. The Fifty23 blog has a few videos of El Mac working on the outside mural here. Each one of the burlap paintings took up most of the height of the wall, it was pretty striking to see the art consume that much of the gallery space. There were also two prints for sale in the back, the largest one “Songs of Songs” was sadly all sold out.
I was definately an impressive series of paintings, if you happen to be in the area I recommend stopping by and taking a look.
